Title: Getting ready
Post by: Downeast on July 14, 2014, 03:01:23 PM
Spent the weekend checking on several new hunting spots and then came home and pulled out a bunch of decoys, touching them up, re-rigging, and even cleaning out the duck boat. Duck season never really ends. Getting that little tingle in my trigger finger and waiting for that first little inkling of a early fall breeze that foretells the coming season. ;D

Addendum! Fall catalogs coming in the mail. That's a good sign.

Seen some geese out in a field this morning , may be locals but first I have seen flocked up and out feeding away from a lake or slough this year.  Was about 30-40 or so, it got me thinking a out sorting thru dekes and blinds and getting things ready to roll.

Took the boat out this weekend and checked some of our blinds. They all survived Arthur, even with 80 mph winds. We lost 3 blinds back during Irene. At roughly $800 to replace one blind it adds up quickly.  :(

Ill be honest I have never hunted over water out of a permanent blind but it looks like fun.  We do 90% field shoots up here with a little pond jumping in the afternoon sometimes just to kill time .  I had 2 amazing shoots last year both on harvested pea fields, with some average shoots thru out the year ending with a terrible one in the last week that saw us only down 3 mallards.  Talk about a bored retriever that day, the to good shoots really gave him a work out.

We mostly hunt the coastal waters of NC for divers, seaducks, and swan. We maintain 4 blinds but do a lot of hunting from skiffs and layout boats as well. It's challenging to say the least and it all revolves around the weather and the wind. If the wind picks up you can easily get caught in heavy seas and a great day out there can quickly become very treacherous.   :o

Haha, we are on completely different ends of the spectrum when it comes to waterfowl hunting. Looking forward to some pics of any up and coming shoots this fall.
This is opening day last year.

Took the boat out a few weekends ago to check on our blinds and found a barn owl nesting in one. So, I'll have to wait until "junior" leaves the roost for a life of his own. Those things are messy!

We also planted a little millet in our impoundment as well so things are starting to come together. How about you?

Weird year weather wise , not sure if the geese will be moving down from up north by the opener but I will be ready just in case. 1 month now.
