Title: 6.5-284, range time

2- 3 shot groups at 100 yards
1- 5 shot group at 200 yards

Post by: .257 on November 30, 2017, 07:09:59 PM: Yes I have had it to 1000 a few times. I am fairly new to the long range shooting. The best I have done was a 3 shot 8 inch group at 1000 yards. Perfect conditions. I have a lot to learn about reading the wind. But the gun is capable of doing the job. Most of my groups at 1000 are in the 3 shot 11" group range.

Have shot a lot more at 600 yards so far, most groups are 4" to 5" for a 10 shot group.

I can tell you from shooting at 1,000 yards the toughest thing to do is gauge the wind. Get some range flags so you can at least have an idea what the wind is doing at 300-500-800 yards. There is an uncontrolled variable in there even with range flags but at least you have a better idea what you're dealing with. Its tough when the wind cuts down and your DOPE has to change.

Once we were testing our accuracy @ 600 yards vs a 20ish mph full value wind. We had about five feet of hold off, aka Kentucky Windage, in order to hit the 12" gong but we did it.

I am trying to learn to read the mirage because the wind is never the same. At those ranges 5 mph has a big impacted on your hold, it can be as much as 10" difference

The gun and load groups in the 4" to 5" vertical range at 1000. It is always the wind that gets me with the horizontal.
I am lucky to be able to shoot with some of the top shooters in the area, and they laugh at me. They tell me they have been shooting long range for X amount of years and I have been shooting with them for 1 year, and expect to be competitive. But I really enjoy it so naturally I want to be good at it... 8)
