for deer at 200 yards or less what do you think of a 165 grain bullet in any of the makes out there?

That is a close shot you would be better off using a 168 barnes or an e- tip . The reason not as much damage to the eating part because of construction.

for deer just about any 165gr soft point bullet will work, but like northern hunter posted, if you want less meat damage, at those ranges, go with something like the barnes, e-tips, or gmx's

If you're just talking 200yds or less, trajectory isn't an issue. A stout 180 will do everything you need and not mess up as much meat as a lighter bullet going a couple hundred feet per second faster. I've had superb service from the 180gr Nosler E-Tips in my 300. If I went to a 165/168gr bullet, it would definitely be the E-Tip/GMX/TTSX.

I usually let the rifle decide what weight bullet is most accurate and load from there.   I haven't had much luck with bullets lighter than 180gr. in my 300WBY.   Please keep us posted if you find a 165gr. that works.   :)

I've had sub moa loads in my .300 Vanguard with both 168 grain TSX and TTSX bullets.  Both of them also produced great results on a variety of Western US, African and New Zealand game animals.

I've used 180 grs Accubonds, and have taken African plains game, and white tail deer with no issues.  No significant meat damaged were found in the animals I've shot.  I think the 300 Wby was designed around the 180 grs bullet, but I'd let the rifle decide what it likes.
