Title: Is this a weatherby with an fn action?
Post by: Mustanghunter50 on April 11, 2018, 08:03:33 PM
So I have this fn Mauser action in 243 that I’ve been told may be a weatherby...it also has a weatherby 2 3/4x10 scope with buehler mounts.  There is the diamond in the stock and I was told that the original owner had it custom ordered in the early 50s. There’s a serial # “c15xx”

I’m trying to post a second pic of the diamond but am having a hard time

Does it appear to have the original barrel? Can you take a pic of any barrel markings? It may be a Winslow Arms...but both a Weatherby or Winslow Arms are usually marked as such on the barrel.

No checkering? If I had to guess, I would lean towards a Mauser 98 action in a custom stock done in a Weatherby style.

The butt pad is usually a dead giveaway.Unless it's worn bad there should be script in a rectangle in middle.

Could have been a custom 243 on an FN Mauser then Weatherby did his thing to it.Does it have a jeweled bolt and follower?Did you check to see if there was anything on the butt pad?I'm beginning to think Weatherby only did the stock work and didn't do anything to the barreled action.

Butt pad is a white line. Not sure it’s original

The story is this was ordered either in the very late 40s or early 50s. I’m wondering when weatherby started out how consistent everything was when he first started making custom guns in Mauser actions

I've seen White Line on them too. It's my take that Weatherby stocked it and put the scope on it,but didn't do any metal work to it.

Back then you could take him your rifle and he would add his twist to it.Some people were die hard 243 guys and didn't want a Weatherby cal so they stocked it and scoped it in Weatherby fashion. If Weatherby had done the barrel it would be a Timken.I've never seen Weatherby put the SN on the barrel either. If metal work had been done I believe the script WEATHERBY would be on the left front ring of the action too.The owner could have worn the pad out and put a White Line on it in the 60's.I believe that's when Pachmyer was adding the half moons to the external edges of their pads.

To a certain collector that could prove things up or believe it is an old Weatherby redo it might bring 2K in a 243.My guess is that it would be worth 900 bucks give or take a 100 either way.I think that Weatherby might have installed the front sight too because if I'm right the scope can be removed and a peep sight flipped up that is part of the base.Is this correct?

I’m not sure about the sight, I’ll have to remove the scope and find out.

It should be folded down at the rear of the base.If there you could see it easily.

I have a Southgate .300 Weatherby, but it is marked as such. Your barrel looks like the original barrel when it was made into a .243.

It is certainly possible that this stock could have been done at that facility, but it would be unusual with no checkering.

My gut tells me this is a stock done in a Weatherby style, but by a custom stockmaker.

That is the nature of custom rifles - unless they're marked...you're not sure.
