Title: Speer bullets
Post by: terminator on August 31, 2018, 11:50:23 AM
Anyone using Speer bullets? I have never tried them for some reason. They usually seem to be cheaper than other brands.Thinking about trying some for plinking target practice.

I use the 140 gr. Hot Cor and 145 gr. Boat tail in my 7mm-08 for hogs. All one shot kills from 35 yards to 400 yards. The 400 yard was a 205 pound hog. I use the 200 gr. Hot Cor in my 338 Federal on  my black bear hunt with devastating results. All loads are very accurate and near book maximum loads.

I've used Speer bullets for a long time, though over the last decade or two they've been largely supplanted by Nosler and Hornady.  I still use Speer in two of my rifles, though.  I use the 150gr Flat Point in my 30-30WCF, and I use the 220gr Flat Point in my 350RemMag.  Both of these are the Hot-Cor design, where a molten lead core is poured into the formed copper cup, rather than a cast core being swaged in place.  Supposedly, this cuts down on core separation, and is really the precursor to bonded bullets, in some ways.  Based on the rifles I use these bullets in, I can't speak to whether or not the process helps with core separation, as neither is known to blow bullets apart.  But both bullets expand well in game (based on wound channels and exits) and I've never lost a game animal or varmint I've shot with these bullets.

I've used the 145 gr SBT in my 7mm/08 for many years as well as  the 120 SBT in my 25/06. Never had a problem, accurate and well priced.

Used Speer bullets a lot. 130 Bt in 270, great on whitetail. 165 BT in 308 and 30-06, also on whitetail. 140 in a 264 win mag, whitetail and muledeer. 150 gr grandslam in 270 for elk
All proformed well
Than l tried a Barnes bullet 😎😎

I tried the 165 Grand Slams in my 300 H&H with good success, but ended up going back to Nosler partitions.

Yep I use the 100 grain Speer SP in my .243 and the 130 grainer in one of my 7mm-08. The main critters I use them on are feral goats and pigs. I think they are a very underrated projectile.
I have some 150 grain Hot Cores loaded up in my .270 WBY but am yet to test them.

I've used them in various of calibers and they worked good, the discontinued 243 cal. 105gr bullet was great in my 240 Weatherby.

I use 270gn Hot-Cor Speer’s in my 9.3x62mm Mauser. They are incredibly accurate for such a big bullet.

+1 eford, I've used the 270 gr BTSP in a 375 H&H, they are very accurate, and worked great on moose and elk.

Hello Roger.
I will try to post image of three shots with Speer bullet 165 grains with my Vanguard S1 300 WM distance 150 meters. That amunition was reloaded by myself.  It looks like two shots in same place but reallly there are three. For me, that bullet kills very well and bring a perfect perfomance talking about precision. I win Weatherby perfomance description with that rifle.. LOL. The bullet is 308" spitzer soft point Hot-Cor
Be fine Roger and every forist.

Same here and I'm really glad you asked this question. They cost quite a bit less than other bullets but from what I'm reading they're a good bullet. Ima try some

This is how accurate the Speer’s can be. I shot this group @ 100 yards from a sitting position using tall sticks.

I use the 145 grain Grand Slams in my 7x57 Mauser load and am working up a load with the 350 grain Uni-Cors for my 45-70.  In my experience with them in the 7x57 they're MOA or better accurate and do the job well.  The only experience I have so far with the Uni-Cors is in the Federal Classic loads, which Federal calls the Hot-Cores for some reason.  I get around a MOA group give or take with them in my Marlin 1895.

My Original deer load for my 30-06 I used the speer 150  boat tail. With 59 gr. Of Imr 4350.
I switched to the nosler solid base because one came apart. But never lost a deer. I see they still make them. Might just buy A box.

What interesting post it is. I have 20 Speer 165 grains bullets only and 100 of 150 grains. I will reload the firsts only for hunting and I will keep that bullets very well because in my country there are not dealers. In Argentina, my country, it is very difficult obtain that things and day by day it is more poor than the most poor hunting accesories market. It is a pity, because it is a great country, big, extensives land ant hunting lands, but it is lit it is and authoryties are doing all possible for win the first place premium in this fact.
Now, reading my posts I think that I have to give you my excuses about my bad english lenguage. Dont think please that I do it intentionally. I post by  basics instint and a little knoledge since I was an student. I dont like to use dictionary or translator books. Please, sorry friends-
I enjoy very much reading your post because I learn a lot. I always say you are the best  people with practice and experience in guns.
Sincerely, Juan, from Argentina.

juan, don't worry about your English, we can understand what your saying, it's all cool.  8)  There was times when I was younger, we didn't have a lot of choice in reloading componants either, we had to use what the small local store had available, but the ammo we reloaded still worked  8)

Speer is a quality bullet. While I don't use them much for hunting purposes, Speer Gold Dots are are one of the most commonly carried bullets by law enforcement. There is a reason for that - performance. I carry them every day and trust them 100%. There are so many decent hunting bullets out there these days it's not hard to find a good brand and bullet. Bullet technology sure has come a long way since I was young. The old Core-Lokt bullets were pretty good in their day and still not actually bad, even by today's standards.

Used Speer hot cores and boat tails for years in the 270's, 30 cals, & 243.    Norma shot that Wyoming antelope with a little speer 85 grain boat tail  when we were up there,  blew right thru.  Use to use  a 270 cal 130 gr boat tail as my accuracy  test benchmark standard and deer bullets  these were older bullets,  current 30 cal boat tails are OK, but not my accuracy benchmark.    Hot core's have always worked for us.  The 130 gr 270 and 85 gr 243 boat tails in our rifles shoot one ragged hole groups.

I like Speer's hunting bullets but not the Gold Dots.  I had to carry them until I was put in charge of the firearms department of the department I work for and that was the first thing I changed.  I'm not a fan of the Gold Dots and after seeing the results of the ballistic tests we conducted with them and the Winchester Ranger T-Series we went with the Ranger T-Series ten years ago and never looked back.  I've had to put down lots of deer that have been hit by cars and always shoot the deer in the head with them and they take a while to die with the Gold Dots compared to the ones I've shot with the Ranger T-Series which are near instant kills.  To each their own but when it comes to personal protection and work I'll take the Ranger T-Series every time.

Beautiful country for sure. I would like to try out some Ranger T-series, although I do stand by the Gold Dots (not the G2 Gold Dots, which suck, especially out of short barrels). Here's one a a zillion articles: http://gunblast.com/RKCampbell-GoldDot.htm

Juan, beautiful country, and one of the countries in my bucket list to hunt.  Now more than ever, I have two reasons to visit Argentina, one to hunt, and two, my wife's niece lives in Buenos Aires and my wife wants to visit.

BTW Juan, thank you for the wonderful things your country is doing with the Venezuelan refugees.  Your country opened the doors to my wife's niece, and in less than two months she had a work permit, and she now has a temporary residency.  Again, thank you!!!!!  Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the post.

Yes I believe you are correct.  He used it in the OKH series before the 338 WM.  On a side note I also use Speer's .243 105 grain Spitzer in my Lightweight Stainless Mark V 240 Magnum.  They are long discontinued.  I find them at gun shows also.
