Title: Ammo, what ammo?
Post by: TexWeatherby on January 11, 2021, 12:48:53 PM
The shortage looks to be as crazy as ever. I got in the "before opening time" line outside Academy this morning. It's like Black Friday. It's first come first served and then it's gone in minutes. I snagged some 5.56 at 10 bucks a box, higher than the $7 it was a year ago, but reasonable compared to the prices I've been hearing about. Handgun ammo - nothing. I really think this situation will continue at least through mid-year. If the newly elected commies accomplish the devious crap everybody thinks they will pull, this situation may go on for a very long time. The shooting range in my area has plenty 9mm FMJ but they want 30 bucks a box for it (ammo that should be $12-13 a box).

I was buying some ice fishing spoons for LOTW and walked by the ammo section. The shelves were completely empty in the rifle and pistol ammo sections, Wow!!!

Saturday at our little swap meet  $ 185 per box  of 50 Winchester white box 223 cheap stuff.  $ 50 per box of 50 ,  9mm luger cheap stuff.  No loaded 223 or 9mm in any of our stores and it's been that way for a few months now.   There is still a very small amount odd ball ammo and bullets in  less popular calibers and bullet weights.    No primers for months,  powder is almost as scarce.

Should have stocked up on reloading supplies long before now. If you guys have any rifles you want to sell now would be the time to list them.

catskinner,  we always have a flock of our favorite Canadian snowbirds down in the warm winter grounds in the Valley.  I'd almost bet a few of them are stocking up on ammo where they can,   I don't know how or if they can transport it back to Canada ?   Never really thought about it before.  Or just leave it here in the States with friends they can hunt down here if they want.

I'm going to say something I will probably shouldn't say,  but I'm going to say it anyway.  This crap that's going on has been brewing since the 60's, probably more so since Clinton was elected especially on the gun side of things.  Us older guy's have kept up with things (you younger guys weren't around to see the trends coming) we have seen the writing on the wall since  the early 90's and actually some States a few years earlier  than  the Brady bill which Schummer was involved and Clinton signed.  This is as bad as I've ever seen it at least for gun/ammo/component shortages and restrictions/laws, actions  which I suspect are coming.   I think this is way more far reaching than most would admit to.

Well gents, the poop has started. Sheila Jackson Lee, a "congresswoman" from Houston, has submitted a bill (along with others) that would create a national gun registration/licensing requirement (which includes a psychological evaluation), along with banning possession of certain calibers of ammunition. We can only hope her gun grabbing attempts fail miserably. It's a little long, but I have posted the verbiage below directly from her website. This is total debauchery and needs to stop. If you have time, send this "public servant" a message with what you think of her bill (https://jacksonlee.house.gov/contact/email-me). Here's the bill:

“The second bill introduced in this trio of gun safety bills is H.R. ____, the Sabika Sheikh Firearm Licensing and Registration Act. This bill creates a process for the license and registration of firearms and the possession of certain ammunition.  For the registry, each person will have to transmit the make, model, and serial number of the firearm, along with the identity of the owner, the date the firearm was acquired, and where the firearm will be stored. They must also include a notice of any person that may be loaned the firearm. This must be done within 3 months after the effective date for previously acquired firearms, and on the same day for any firearms acquired after the enactment of the bill.  The bill also establishes a database of all registered firearms that is accessible to the public and all branches of government.  The bill creates licensing requirements that includes a minimum age of 21, a criminal background check, a psychological evaluation, a certified training course, and an insurance policy.  For an antique firearm display license or a military-style weapons license, there will be additional requirements for certification established by the Attorney General.  This bill permits the Attorney General to be able to deny a license if the individual is prohibited by Federal law from possessing a firearm and if the individual has been hospitalized with mental illnesses (this includes diagnosis of depression, homicidal ideation, suicidal ideation, attempted suicide, and addiction) or on account of conduct that endangers self or others.  For the transfer of firearms, this bill makes it unlawful for a person to transfer to a person who is not licensed or without the notification of the sale, loan, or gift to the Attorney General.  Additionally, the bill makes it unlawful for possession of ammunition of 0.50 caliber or greater, as well as a large capacity ammunition feeding device. However, this does not apply to the United States or a State department, agency, or a political subdivision of a State, or a law enforcement officer. This also doesn’t apply to a licensee under title 1 of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, a licensed manufacturer or importer, or an organization that provides training or is registered.

Point taken. I toned down my comment for the sake of the forum, although I have no fear of these tyrants.

the point of my post was, the craziness has gotten to the point of people trying to buy ammo and reloading components in an another country and trying to get it shipped across an international border.

Before 9/11 we use to be allowed to bring a certain amount of ammo and reloading stuff across the border, but homeland security put a stop to that after 9/11. Now, I guess you can take your chances, I'm sure some gets though, and some don't

When I searched for primers, a Canadian company came up as having them. Yup, they had it posted "no U S sales" . I was not specifically looking to buy anything from them. There prices looked high until I realized it was Canadian dollars.  ;D

yep, that dollar exchange gets us pretty good sometimes.  :o  I see that http://higginsonpowders.com  up here still selling 5000 count case lots of WLRM and CCI BR-4 primers for not a bad price.

https://raynershinegunworks.com  has 1000 count bricks even federal 215M's

Stopped in two more stores this morning. Not much of anything unless you want 12 or 20 gauge bird shot. Plenty of 8, 7 1/2, very small amount 6 and 4 shot. No buckshot. For defense purposes out to maybe 20 feet, bird shot actually will do the job pretty well and won't go through as many walls as buckshot.

One key difference is that there are a whole lot more assholes out there than shooters and reloaders. Just a guess ;D
