Title: Take care of yourselves, guys!
Post by: TexWeatherby on November 04, 2022, 09:32:20 AM
Most of us often take our lives and our health for granted (and even our friends & loved ones sometimes), usually because oftentimes, we're just too damn busy. Last night, while watching the World Series, I got a call informing me that a friend I've known since I was seven years old had just died suddenly. He was 62, not that old by today's standards. We hung out almost every day as kids and stayed in touch all these years. He didn't take very good care of himself (too much alcohol mostly). I just wanted to remind everybody to grab every day big (don't put off that hunt you always wanted to go on, etc.) and keep an eye on your health because crappy stuff can creep up on you before you realize it when you're busy with the usual life stuff. Stay well and good luck this season.  :)

Good advise!!!

Many of us are getting to the age where this happens all too frequently.

In the last two years I've lost 4 good friends and several others, and all of them were up to ten years younger than me.

This also hit close to home with me two years ago shen I got a new general doctor who had me take a blood test and it showed that I had prostrate cancer.  I didn't have any idea or outward symptoms.  On my first phone conversation with a urologist I told him to start the treatment, and 9 weeks of 5 days a week radiation treatments caught it in time and its been undetectable in all of my blood tests since then.

I'm at a point in life where I'm retired, I don't have a lot of money but I'm comfortable, my house is paid for, my youngest son is a grandfather, so it's time to enjoy life.

I've dreamed of hunting Grizzly bears for more than 50 years, so last year I finally went to Alaska and did one.  I had also booked a Canadian moose hunt for this past September, but covid put it on hold it until next year.

I'm way past 30 years old and the mountains seem to get higher and steeper every year, so I'm also thinking that instead of doing a dream hunt every 2 or 3 years, I should be doing 2 or 3 of those hunts every year, along with a Hawaiian or Caribbean vacation with my GF every year.

There are a lot of people that either don't have a regular doctor they see (PCP) and just wait until they don't feel well or have an accident. They feel that not knowing or just feeling good is a good enough indicator of their general health. (I'm strong as a bull or I've never felt better) An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is very true. Sometimes you just don't know what may lay dormant in your body until it's too late. Sometimes a simple blood test is all it takes. ;)

I found out last night from a text that my older brother has dementia and took a nasty fall. My youngest brother texted me. My sick brother is unresposive in his dementia making it difficult to figute out what happened in the fall. He will be 77 on the 18th. I am one of 7 boys. The 2 oldest are long dead as is my next younger.  This one is the 3rd oldest, 4.5 years older than I am. There is one between us in age. None of us live anywhere near him or each other by thousands of miles.

This is close to home for me (well not the dying part anyway (touch wood)). It is not the age thing for me but having a spinal cord injury takes its toll on one's body harder than normal and wears parts out quicker. I am only 43 but been pushing, lifting and clambering about using my shoulders in all sorts of scenarios (and man Have I have abused them over the years) and these years are starting to catch up with me now. I am starting to get more pain in them in have had to have injections to stop it, but the injections are not so good for continued use. So I have had to start deciding to instead of being mr independent, just simply ask for some help. I have also started physiotherapy to help with my shoulders and lots of other problem areas my body has. I know I won't be out hunting the hills in my 60's on an ATV by my myself. But I need to keep in as good as shape now so as when I do get to go on a hunt, I will be able to do so.

Excellent advice.

A couple of military friends, younger than me passed, one due to a massive heart attack (50 years old) and the other to cancer in the stomach (57).  Lately one of the retired Chief passed away, never to enjoy his civilian retirement.   Enjoy life to fullest, and don't worry about the small stuff, we can't take them with us.  ;D

3rd generation diabetic here! I've never been overweight! My grandfather lost both his legs to it. My second oldest brother died from it! Kidney failure and blindness ain't my idea of a good way to go!~ If you suspect, get tested!

If you spend any measurable amount of time outside go see a dermatologist once a year. I have been dealing with skin cancers  for 30 years now. I was 37 when I had the first one removed. I had one removed in my right ear in July of this year 9 weeks of changing the bandage twice a day for it to heal. The ear is a little disfigured but still there. My mohs surgeon said he got it all out but recommended radiation treatments as a precaution. I just started those this week. I go Monday thru Friday every morning for 6 weeks.
I’ve always worn caps, hats, etc….
Good dermatologists are hard to find but we’ll worth seeking out.

My wife and I have been stuck because of Covid and we have both had medical issues (Her cancer and me with having to have biopsies for suspected returning cancer). we finally got out for a management doe hunt with the outfitter we have been going to since I first took my son to for his first deer in 1998. Four day booking in some beautiful country near the California redwoods all inclusive. This was to be a sentimental hunt using the same caliber rifle as my first deer hunt in 1964 (250 Savage). Myself and my other 3 siblings all took our first deer with that rifle. My wife's grandfather and father both hunted with a model 1920 that my son now owns. He took his first deer with that same rifle in 1998 one and done. I bought a new Savage 114 American classic in that caliber in 2009 and retired the 1920 model. we got a nice doe on the second morning at a laser ranged 340 yards, high shoulder shot. Dropped in her tracks with a total pass through using a hand loaded 100 grain Nosler E-Tip @2800 fps. No wasted meat. Best time we have had in years especially being with old friends.

Good job, Chet. I'm a 250 Savage fan myself but in a Savage 99. Living in the high country in Wyoming I too have had issues with skin cancer and am intimately familiar with MOHS surgery. The folks at the U of Utah and the Huntsman center are great.

I'm 67 and still actively ranching.  The day we shipped calves/ oct 12 I rode horse to gather and sort but by lunch I wasn't feeling very good. Let the kids take over and I went to bed. I wasn't outside again until the 25th and barely out of bed. Don't know if it was Covid or some other bug they say is going around but it really knocked me for a loop.
I've had many broken bones, Knee replacement, thyroid taken out and nothing set me back like what ever I had.
Just got over tired and was pushing a little hard. Guess I'm not as young as I used to be.

I had a heart attack in 2018, I was 45 and under 200 lbs in pretty good shape, so it can happen at any time. Other than have to take meds every day now, I never changed much, you have to live life,  f**k it right.    I had covid 3 times now, for me it's hardly nothing, very mild cold,  but I have had friends that was very sick for a good 3 weeks with it, one barely pulled though.

A few years back I had a TIA, (Transient ischemic attack) sometimes called a mini-stroke. Long story short, after minor treatment, test and intravenous fluids, I was released and told I should see a neurosurgeon. I did and all has been well ever since. I had the first two Covid vaccines, opted not to take anymore, and to-date Covid free. I did get the flu shot last month. I try not to leave too much to chance anymore, but even with care, theres always the unexpected. TGFAD

I can definitely relate to many of the comments. I also had a TIA a few years back, a stone stuck in my ureter about 8-9 years ago (the tube from the liver to the bladder) that almost killed me and then been on active surveillance with prostate cancer the past three years. My urologist just called me last week and said the last biopsy (3rd one, just done recently) is not looking so good, so it's time to look at treatment options in the near future - consultation next week. You just never know what crap is going to happen, which is why we just have to live our lives and enjoy the good parts as long as we can! Stay well and get that checkup you've been putting off (do it for your family)!

At least kidney stones can be treated with ultra sound (I believe). Gall stones can't. ask me how I know.

I don't think I had stones but my Gall Bladder went bad. Doctor sent me to the hospital in the ambulance on a Sunday morning. They let me stew until Tuesday evening before they got me to surgery. They were even packing me in ice I was so hot, When they touched the Gall Bladder it exploded and I had an "episode"  on the table, whatever that meant.
Great socialized medicine

The scary part about my older brother is my younger brother called me about an hour apart and repeated what he told me iin the first call, after the text that explained it all.  He was confused when I asked about it. He is 68!
