Title: 204 ruger vs the 22-250 rem
Post by: PAbuckhunter270 on June 08, 2012, 06:13:46 PM
I need some info on the two calibers, I have zero knowledge on both. I need a fur friendly coyote rifle that's good out to 200 yards. Any expierence or info you got on the two calibers would be appreciated.

Thanks, Scott

Troy ?  ;D

PA: I went the 204 route because I got a good deal. This gun is spooky accurate, flat shooting,a joy to shoot, and costs nothing to reload for.Check out the BC's for the 20 vs 22.Either of the calibers will serve you well.

The 204 will do you good, but the 22-250 has a better bullet selection. If you reload then the selection gets better. Also bullet choice is important when saving pelts. My vote is the 22-250. Read up in a good loading manual, you will find a ton of info in it. Let us know what you get.

Thanks for all the info guys. I am leaning towards the 22-250 but I always hear how accurate the 204s are and how fun they are too shoot.

22-250, better bullet selection, I used the 52 gr.HPBT Sierra on coyotes, made a bunch of car payments with the hides, no holes to sew up, sometimes you pick them up and it sounds like their full of jello inside. Just my 2 cents worth, You will enjoy either, good shooting

My vote goes for a 22.250, if I already had one I would get a .204 to have fun with. But as my primary wylie gun I'd go with the 22.250, theres not much bullet in a .204 for breezy conditions. In a 22.250, 50 gr. bergers or 53 gr hornady match hollow points work great with minimal or no fur damage, they usually wont even exit. Varget is a great powder for the 22.250.

Well in the varmint leauge that I shoot in The man to beat shoots A 204 Ruger. but then again he shot A 223 last year and the year before all with diffrent rifles and he has allways been the man to beat. But I would listen to troy ( Ballistic ) he has shot more coyotes than any body I know.

200yds?

223/5.56 will do just fine.

243win would be nice too, better BC than 22 or 204

223 shooting a FMJ is going to be as fur friendly as it gets or some lite bullet like a 30 grain Berger. It might not exit if shoot coyote in the shoulder.Sierra makes a little frangible bullet I like out of my 222.It's designed to "Blow Up" at Hornet speed. At 500fps faster than Hornet speed they really come apart, but shooting them another 300fps faster out of a 223,they probably would come apart in flight.
