Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Re: AR's
« on: Today at 07:05:32 PM »

I have 5 80pct AR-15 lowers and 2 80% AR-10 DPMS Style lowers on the shelf. I've got a couple of lower kits but I usually don't buy lower parts until I've decided what the purpose of the rifle is. There is no tracking these lowers and they don't have serial numbers. They are just a piece of aluminum until I finish milling them. The laws are funky about these. I have to own the tools to finish them and I have to be the one who finishes them. In other words, you can't buy a 80% lower and come over to my shop and use my mill to finish it. Once I finish one, I can't sell it because it has no serial number. Even if I make it California compliant and put a serial number on it, I still can't sell it.

That is the way to go now.The equipment is inexpensive and the milling is very easy to do if you are anyway mechanically inclined.

Thanks for the replies.
Brett: I was actually looking at them in the .222. Not sure why I need one in .222 but several here seem to really like that caliber.

Mike:Shilen caps, cleaning rod, and a red dot from other sellers.Doug got there at 8 and he said people were walking out with multiple barrels.Barrels were a great price but none in calibers or rifle manufacturers we wanted.

I really enjoyed meeting Doug ( Blackbear3)in Ennis,Tx Saturday morning for Shilens Swap Meet and tour of their facility. The guys were running some machinery to show us the process barrels are made and would stop to answer any questions we had.I am attaching some pictures of the process and machinery. They do a lot of hand lapping on the barrels as well as using the machinery. The picture with screen in is in in their Quality Control room where they using a bore scope to check out the rifling. They showed us how they air gauge their barrels for premium quality. Doug found a great BBQ place in Ennis. Did you make it to Luckenbach,Tx for the concert Doug?

Good shooting Mark.I bet as you go up the ladder you will find the speed to go with the accuracy.Probably right at the top.

I don't have that particular model but have several Nikons on rifles. I think they are the best bang for the buck glass out there. I also like the power range you are looking at.
