Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Re: 1,000 yards

I use "Shooter Ballistics" app and it works great for me. A few guys in our club like "Bullet Flight", but it is not as user friendly on the outcomes. Both apps have an extensive bullet library. I tend to ignore the temperature correction all together. With todays powders the temperature correction is way off (for me anyways).

If your have a GPS on your phone, Shooter Ballistics will pull data from the nearest weather station.

I understand both apps use inputs from Brian Lutz??

Accessories / Re: What is the best rifle scope out there
« on: March 04, 2014, 03:24:21 AM »
Maybe your budget, or purpose determines the best scope for you??

Like many others, I have had a great number of scopes from various manufacturers- priced from $69 to $2000. All have served their intended purpose.

Look at your budget. Then look at your purpose. Select a few of your favorite manufacturers that you feel are reliable to you and some others and make a selection.

If you like Leupold, do not overlook a Redfield. Leupold is now making Redfield scopes and for the money they are darn good glass if you can look through one locally and compare.

A few local shooters at my club use $4000, 10x80 March scopes. I used a $1800, 12-42x56mm NightForce- which I just sold to buy a $1000, 10-60x60mm Sightron. I'm sure my scores will not change, and I can put the extra $800 towards bullets and powder  ;)

Guy's, my local Cabellas got A new shipment of powder's 2 week's ago and it came in with 4 cases of IMR 4007, 4831, 4350, and Superformance. Are you sure they discontinued 4007? I could use some H- 50 BMG, Retumbo, and some H-1000, if anyone spot's any. I'll check Corey's supplier's first. Thanks....jerry

I WILL TAKE 8# of H4350!!

Place your order at Powder Valley AND Brunos. You can cancel your order for whichever place does not come in stock first.

You will be hard pressed to find an 8# jug of anything right now, but wherever you order will likely have all 1# jugs of the same lot #.

.308 Lapua Brass and .308 setup sold.

.44 Magnum setup still available.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Re: Barrel Break In
« on: February 28, 2014, 12:47:17 PM »
If you clean every shot for 5-10 rounds you will notice metallic particles on your patch (I use a jag and Hoppes). When I do not see ANY metallic particles after cleaning each round I will go to 3-5 round groups and clean between groups till about 50 rounds. If you use a chrony, you will see velocity pick up dramatically around 100-200 rounds- so much that you may need to re-zero your scope.

I'm talking breaking in custom 5R/5C barrels that are already hand lapped. Factory barrels could take much longer to break in.

Custom Shop / Re: Stock upgrade / replacement for Vanguard Synthetic

A Bell & Carlson stock is probably your best bet. Stocky's Stocks has a really nice selection for Weatherby stocks for a few hundred dollars.

Free floated is the way to go.

A 1:12 twist .308 will handle 185g Bergers just fine. SUB- MOA at 1000yds out of a factory R700 26" varmint barrel put in a B&C Medalist stock.

Anything heavier than a 185g will need 1:11 or 1:10 twist.

Second choice is 155g Scenars followed by 175g SMK's.

Rifles / Re: FS- 6.5mm Broughton 5C, 1.250", 1:8, 31" barrel
« on: November 18, 2013, 08:20:54 PM »
those hybrids only come in batches every half a year and you gotta get em while they are hot off the production floor. i bought enough to outlast my barrel and they are going quick. if you want i can keep an eye out for em.

I have 1000 on hold already from a Berger distributor in Miami who is a member at my club. I can get you more than you'll ever need from him. Was just giving a trade option for someone who doesn't have the cash.

Rifles / FS- 6.5mm Broughton 5C, 1.250", 1:8, 31" barrel
« on: November 18, 2013, 06:14:43 PM »
Brand new off the latest run from Broughton and shipped last week to Carl Bernosky. I ordered 2 of the exact same barrel and do not really need both of them as I am also going to build a straight .284 and need some cash. All 3 barrels are sitting at Carl's now just waiting for PTG to finish the .284 reamer.

Broughton 6.5mm, 1.250" straight tube, 1:8 twist, 5C, 416SS barrel. 31" blank that will finish at 30". I have 890 rounds on my first 6.5x284 barrel from Broughton and it shot a 597-32x last time out.

The barrel is at Carl Bernosky's and if you so desire, I will send Carl my PTG reamer to chamber this barrel as I am sending it anyways for the other barrel. PTG specs... 0.296" neck with a 0.188" freebore. This is a John Hoover spec reamer from PTG and allows for a skim cut on Lapua brass with a finished round diameter of 0.293".

$410 shipped (same as invoice from Broughton)- using my reamer is at no charge as long as Carl does the work.

I will ONLY trade for 1000- 7mm Berger 180g Hybrids.

Reloading / Re: 6.5 Talk expanded.... SUB MOA @ 1000yds
« on: November 16, 2013, 12:49:31 PM »
As we sit and wait for the .284 build to come together I have a FL State Championship this weekend. Last year was great with a 2nd place finish over the two combined days.

First day under our belt and it's not going too bad. Overcast skies with minimal wind and mirage. The top 10 are spread by only 5 points!!

Tomorrow is forecast to be much nicer and sunny. Should play into those mirage shooters.
