Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Lake of the Woods trip
« on: January 16, 2019, 07:17:02 AM »
My buddy drove up from Colorado and we spent 4 days-10 miles out on LOTW ice fishing. We caught probably 30-40 walleyes and sauger every day. The biggest Walleye was 30 " (released), we also ate fish the first couple days for supper and brought 14 home to share with family and friends.

The peace and quiet was nice since I shut the phone down because it was roaming into Canada. Maybe 20-24" of ice where we fished. Thousands of people out there fishing by us over the weekend and by Monday there was no one within a mile of us. Heading back up soon, after I find some more of the Hot lures.

Well the 3 of us got skunked elk hunting and where driven lower by heavy snows, the elk where heading to their winter areas already when we arrived. We did see elk every day and did have some chances, but no luck. My son and I found sheds and he found the remains of a beautiful 8x7 Bull!! We saw elk on a ridge almost every day in a new area, but the 6 hour hike was way to much. The funny thing was from where we parked to the elk it was a 799 yard shot, I shot a 3" group at 400 with my 340 Arroyo but refused to try that distance. Had a fun time and I brought my buddy with that has damage from being in cardiac arrest for 1/2 hour. He enjoyed being away from his wife and able to make his own decisions.
Opening morning in Minnesota  I turned my head at a shot and when I turned back a trophy buck was spinning and heading back down the trail. An hour latter 2 does showed that I passed on and another spooked behind me at lunch. Sunday I was hoping to see the buck again, but at 10 a big doe showed and I decided to test the 340 out. It was the first time I've seen a deer due a summersault and land on her back, she never even twitched. Blew half her heart out the off side shoulder for about 6'!!! Heading back up with my son and his buddy tomorrow.
My buddy is driving back from Denver and we are heading to Wisconsin Thanksgiving week to do some more deer hunting. Going to split time between Moose Junction and Ino, 2 areas we've hunted in the past. So since I will be disappearing soon again I hope you all have a stomach stretching Thanksgiving!!!

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Nosler over runs

They have some great prices on assorted over run bullets, if anyone is interested some are around 50% off!!

My wife must be my guardian angel, she felt bad that I came home early when I found out she was in the hospital last year. Anyways I added a poll to my original Colorado draw results now that I found out I did get drawn. God I miss my wife so much, she was my BFF and never complained about me hunting or fishing.

Colorado Big Game Draw Results have been posted and my son and Buddy drew cow tags in 76, looks like I will be manning the spotting scope and binoculars. Next year I should draw a plains archery deer tag in 103 and a cow tag in 76.

My wife lost her battle with ovarian cancer today and died in my arms.. I would like to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers and messages. Especially Chris, Roger and Eric for your PMs.

Jean and I were married over 40 years and I can honestly say I've never meet a nicer human being. She was the office manager at a small church and would empty the cash out of her purse to give to the needy when the outreach fund was empty. And would even give her own lunch to someone in need. And on top of that she put up with me, if she's not in Heaven theres no chance for me!?

Since 6/1/2016 she had 27 rounds of chemo, 3 major surgeries and 2 life threatening infections. She finally succumbed to not eating after her bowels stopped working after being resectioned. At least she's not suffering anymore, what a horrible disease!!!  :'( :'( :'( :'( Doug

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / New fish house-camper.

Finally pulled the plug on a new 6x14 Yetti fish house! It comes with a pull out couch and a bunk, room for a couple cots too. It has 6 holes for ice fishing and a panel pulls out so you can spear fish too. Microwave, oven and 3 burner stove along with a forced air furnace will make it a lot more comfortable ice fishing this year. I'm hoping to make it up to Lake of the Woods soon depending on ice thickness and my wife's health.

I just saw this announced on Facebook, proud to see Weatherby catering to the female sportswoman. I Love the look of the camo on this rifle!!

We are officially launching a Mark V Camilla in Sitka Sub Alpine today.  I am super excited about this project and the continued expansion of our women's specific rifles.

I noticed this on Facebook and thought some of you might be interested in listening to Adam answer questions, etc on the 2018 catalog.

Today at 1:30pm PST, join Adam Weatherby LIVE for a discussion of our 2018 New Products. Post your questions in the comments below and we'll cover them during the broadcast.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Colorado elk hunt update
« on: October 27, 2017, 10:36:19 AM »
Every day my buddy glassed between about 50-200 elk in different bunches on the mountains across the valley (it was a good 45 minute ATV ride to get there by trails), unfortunately there is no off trail ATV travel allowed. It took about an hour to hike up the mountain to were we observed the elk feeding 3 days in a row. Three times I drove and then hiked up the mountains to glass and then hopefully shoot a cow elk out of a small bunch we had observed in different areas feeding, unfortunately they either moved on or had bedded down before I arrived each time.

On Wednesday morning before it warmed up enough to pack up for the trip home, we observed 2 additional groups feeding were I had been standing the day before. The highlight of the trip was still hunting in the snow within 30 yards of a huge bull moose that was feeding in a patch of thistles, we also saw 5 other moose feeding in the mountain willow patches.

Every time I go elk hunting in Colorado something bad happens and this time it was the worst. On Tuesday my daughter called and said my wife had been admitted to the hospital with a blocked intestine, they found cancer again too but no plan of attack yet until the blockage is cleared. So I cut my trip short by 5 days and am at the hospital after a 1,400 mile drive.
