It has gotten pretty heavy in the last 5 days even though I've been seeing it for about 2 weeks.

I think the warm weather we have been having started it.

The other thing here lately is all the skunks that have been run over on the highways. They are out a courting too

I retired the Winchester Model 62A in the late 80's.Can't remember what year it was,but guessing 1987.I went to a garage sale and bought a Marlin Model 39 Mountie for 200 bucks.Has a straight grip stock and only a 20" barrel. The reason I did was a friend owned a 39A that shot like a target rifle and I liked the ability of scoping it without side mount.I'm telling you, don't shoot a friends, because if you do you'll be buying one.Tight action, accurate as all get out.Has to be the micro groove.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Youth Hunt
« on: November 05, 2023, 07:12:53 PM »
My Son's 2 girls go to a local daycare and once a year they have an auction to raise funds for emergencies and other things that they need.He placed a youth hunt in the auction for a guided buck under 130 inches.I don't remember the exact bid that won the hunt but was under $500.

Weekend before last the boy and his dad went out and sat in a blind on Saturday.1st day of youth rifle season. They had 22 doe at the feeder that morning and had a great time. That evening the neighbors bothered the deer and pestered them until dark.My son called the game warden and he went to their house at 10pm to talk with the older gentleman and his 3 granddaughters. We never heard back from the warden or the neighbors.Don't have any idea what happened, but the warden did tell my son that he was not going to stand for any harrassment of any hunters, and also said that harassing a youth hunter upped the offense to a Class A Felony. That I did not know.

This weekend came and I found out where they had gone and it wasn't where they had hunted the weekend before so I went there and drove in on my portable blind at daylight.Hadn't gotten into the place 200 yards and spotted 6 or 7 doe and an 8pt buck that had a good spread but was broke off several tines.I was on the east fence line of the place in the shade of mesquites and was still so they didn't mind much about me.They moved off so I fired up the truck and eased further in.Got to the next shaded area and decided to just sit there and watch for a while.A big bodied deer rain up on a high spot and I thought it might have horns and checked it out with binos.About 350 yards away.It was a long tined buck, but he would never look at me.He was looking at something ahead of him.I got to texting my Son and he said they were coming over.Well in the mean time I got some better looks at him with my rifle scope.Nice deer.Told them to hurry on up.I thought about shooting him several times myself, but it was just too far and the way I was parked and the rest I had it just wasn't happening. My Son and the boy came walking up behind me and the buck and doe had moved a little closer but they had bedded down.Got my son and youth hunter to walk West and get set up on an old grain drill for a rest and I'd start up,ease further in, and maybe the buck would get up and head there way for a closer shot.Well it kinda worked out but the kid just couldn't get a good shot on him ever thru the tall Kleingrass in the crp field we were in.So we backed out and left for Saturday evening hunt.

Saturday evening comes and they get to the blind by the feeder and deer come to eat and they see the 10 pt with the same doe, they think, and they don't come to the feeder. They head straight for the grain drill and walk within a few feet of it and stay there until dark.

Sunday morning they get a late start and the 10 is by himself under the feeder eating when they get there. He sees them and slowly turns and walks to a mesquite bottom close by and my Son has to convince the boy that they should back out and get there early this afternoon and the boy wants to get in the blind and just stay there all day long and wait on the buck.

This evening the feeder goes off and sure enough the buck comes out of the bottom, walks to the feeder and starts eating corn. The 308 roars and he is DRT.What a weekend. That boy is still shaking.LOL.

Enjoy the Sunset?

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Strange Deer Behavior
« on: October 26, 2023, 07:33:10 PM »
Been seeing fawns dead on the highway that have spots,so they have to be really young and today I saw a buck on lock down with a doe. They were definitely in mating mode. She was running scared from me both times I went by them and he was not letting her get more than just a couple feet away.Acting like an idiot.Very strange to see this on October 6th.Seeing the fawns with spots means they are definitely screwed up in their cycles. My vet says that cows have been from the very hot Summers we've had the last 2 years and the drought could being causing some of it too.

The rut is on in Texas!

Looks like OPEC Plus is giving old Joe and the US the middle finger.Just when we needed a production cut the least,They took a million bopd out of the market.Russia is part of the cuts too. You'll pay more to fill up your tank no matter who are where you are.Just be sure to thank old Joe for the pain at the pump.
