Rifles / Questions About Weatherby Rifles
« on: January 10, 2020, 02:59:16 PM »
Hello Weatherby Nation Gals and Guys, as you will notice I just signed up and am a newbie, I guess you could say.  The main reason I have joined on here is because I am seriously looking at buying a Weatherby Rifle for deer hunting, it would be my first Weatherby product.  I have hunted with mainly Remington and Winchester bolt action rifles for years.  You ask why do you want to switch brands?

Number one reason is I am a left hand shooter when it comes to long guns, all of my rifles are right hand rifles. As of lately I have become more concerned with a blown primer or case rupture. Also I do think I could become more proficient with the bolt being on the correct side.

Second reason is, some of the other rifle makers don't make a stainless or cerakoted rifle in the cartridge that I would be interested in. Yea, there are a few companies, but I don't believe they can compete, quality wise with a Weatherby. As far as the custom rifles they can get way up into the thousands of dollars, more money than I think they are worth. At this time I really don't want to burn that much cash on one of those rifles, hence the Weatherby seems like a great compromise right now.

Third reason is, it seems that Weatherby Rifles have a reputation of being a quality, strong built rifle that is accurate enough for my hunting requirements. Six or nine locking lugs on the bolt just seems to make for a very strong bolt lock up.

Ok, now for some questions to you Weatherby Experts. These questions may just help me narrow down which model of Weatherby and which cartridge.  At this time I am looking at the Mark V, Weathermark rifle in the tactical grey.  Looks like if I customize the rifle in left hand, I will have a better selection of calibers than going the non custom route. The three cartridges that I am seriously looking at is the 7MM REM. Magnum, 7MM Weatherby Magnum and the 300 WIN. Mag. I currently own a 7MM REM. Mag and a 300 WIN. Mag, plus have all the reloading stuff for those. The past 10 years I have mainly used the 7MM REM. in a model 700 for deer hunting. No problems or issues over those years while deer hunting. Before I started using the 7MM. REM. Mag, I used a 30.06 for several years, never any issues with that cartridge. I must add that I still own several 30.06 rifles, the only problem is, they are right hand rifles.

Ok guys, how much better is the 7MM Weatherby going to be versus the 7MM REM. Mag, other than increased velocity and energy? I know brass will be way more expensive for the 7MM Weatherby for sure.  Will barrel life be significantly less with the 7MM Weatherby? I wouldn't be shooting the rifle much, other than to check the scope and while deer hunting each year. Of course until I found the right load combination for the rifle, I would be doing some bench testing.

At this time I have almost ruled out the 300 Weatherby as a possibility and the 300 WIN might be a possibility. Truly those two cartridges would get the job done deer hunting, but most of my hunting is 300 yards or less, majority of the time 100 yards or less.

You ask why not the 257 Weatherby or the 6.5-300 Weatherby?  Well to tell you the truth I kind of looked at those two cartridges. I know that they are high velocity cartridges that would probably eat a barrel up a lot faster than say a 7MM Weatherby.  You guys correct me if I am wrong, like I said earlier this Weatherby stuff is new to me, don't know a thing about it other what I have read over the years.

And some final questions about any known issues such as rust or anything else.

Have you guys ever had any problems with rust on a stainless rifle with the cerakote finish such as the Weathermark?  I pretty well take care of my guns, but I hunt hard in rain and snow, I can't stand rust.  I gotta say I have never seen the first sign of rust on my Remington Model 700 XCR.  I am hoping that the Weathermark would be as weather resistant as that rifle.  Other words no blued guns for me, its gotta be stainless or coated in a weather beater finish.

Do you guys like the safety on the Mark V rifle, that definitely would be a change for me.

Sorry for the long winded post, I am just trying to find out from the experts so I can make up my mind if I want to pull the trigger on a new Weatherby..... :)

Have a great day, any input would greatly be appreciated.
