I've never used anything other than steel rings and bases and I have never had a failure and I have been hunting and shooting for well over 60 years.

Can't go wrong with good steel.  For my heavy recoil loads (my 340 shooting 300gr bullets included) I use the Ken Farrell Industries steel bases with the recoil lug as well as their steel rings.  Those rifles also have heavy scopes on them, which further stresses the setup.  Those bases and rings are not light, but crazy strong and they have the engineering and production methodology down.  Things like making the ring pairs from a single block of steel and cutting them apart only after all other machining is done ensures precision.

Have you given any thought to ceracoating?

I actually have a cerakoting setup, but I think I would be the first one to cerakote a Regency.  :)  These need to go back to the high-gloss Weatherby bluing.

I've got a couple of Weatherbys that I've had sitting in the safe a long while now that have the bluing "flaking" off on the barrels.  They were that way when I purchased them, so I have no idea if it was from improper storage/cleaning or it was a faulty bluing job.  I've always intended on having them re-done, I've just procrastinated.  :)  One is a Regency, the other is a Mark V - I think they are both around 1980 production.

What's the best avenue to get them reblued?  Does Weatherby handle that directly, do they contract it out?

It all comes down to identifying your target before you shoot. That's as basic as it gets. I personally don't know how anybody paying the slightest bit attention could mistake a man for a deer. Identification is 100% or you don't pull the trigger. Most states have seasonal rules regarding buck or doe, minimum rack size or number of points, etc. - that's the minimum level of detail that has to be determined. If people can't tell a man from a deer, how do they even know if they're even shooting the species they're out there for and if the sex/size is even legal? To me, there's no excuse, period. Sorry for the rant, I just don't find identifying and knowing what the hell you're shooting at very complicated.

That's about as well as you can state it.

No reason something like that should ever happen.  My nephew (8 years old) was shot in the head last spring while turkey hunting with his dad.  Some idiot shot at the decoys (trespassing) with a 22 (illegal weapon) from across the field.  He was insanely lucky...had some surgeries but ended up with no lasting damage other than a  scar with a hell of a story attached to it.

You've got one of the pre-Mark V Weatherbys, built on Mauser actions.  That one looks like it's 1956 production.  Barrel by Timken.  Nice find!

Ammo / 338-378 brass anyone?
« on: November 10, 2020, 11:22:02 AM »
I was going through my stash of stuff I haven't touched in a couple of years, and I have a box of 338-378 brass, MOSTLY once fired (probably 90%+) that I'm not sure I'll ever get around to working up.  Probably a few hundred rounds.  My 338-378 is currently mothballed in the back of the safe awaiting a time when I decide to get it rebarreled.  Just thought I'd see if anyone was interested before I pack them back up...I know when I bought the brass new it was $3+ a round.   :-\

How many rounds until that Burris scope comes apart from the 416 recoil?   ::)

I've got a couple of 460s with the Pendelton brake I would be willing to let go, but I let the only 416 I've ever had go awhile back.  It was a newer one with the Accubrake....I can't say that I've ever seen a 416 with the Pendelton.

Anyone seen one of these?...or better yet, have one they'd be willing to sell?  :)  I've got one in a fixed 6x on one of my 224s, and really like it....wouldn't mind having another!

Rifles / Mk V Deluxe stock wanted

I have a nice 270 Wby barreled action, and I'm in need of a Deluxe stock for it.  It's a Japan production model with what I believe is a #1 contour.  I have a very nice Deluxe stock (extended checkering, wood spacers) that I thought would fit it, but the contour is slightly off.  It's the correct diameter at the tip, but the taper is different.  I actually had that stock first and bought the barreled action for it.  I would pay a fair price for the correct stock or trade one of the other stocks I have.  I've got a Varmintmaster stock, Accumark (Bell & Carlson), and a few others if interested.

Rifles / Re: 340 or 338-378

I've got all of the above (300, 340, 30-378, 338-378), and the 340 is my go-to elk gun.  I use 300 grain Accubonds in it, and it hammers them.  You don't NEED a bullet that heavy, but it bucks the wind great, shoots consistent groups, and that rifle just loves them.  Dial in for the yardage, and it will always put it on target.  I have killed elk with the 30-378 out to 900 yards, which is a shot I wouldn't take with the 340 with that load, but my 30-378 build is too damn heavy to pack around much, so it usually gets left home.  The 338-378 is just a toy that I play with shooting gongs at REALLY long range. :)

Best ground and used in chili, in my experience.
