(Sorry for the long post here) Not sure if I've told this one before but, some 25+ years ago, when I was still a kid, my dad and I received permission to hunt for a few days on a large ranch close to the little town we are from.  I believe this happened in between Christmas and New Years. It was basically a varmint hunt, though we were allowed to hunt ducks off any of the stock ponds if there happened to be any.

The day we went out it was COLD. Snowing, wet, and a BITTER wind. We were more or less driving the ranch in his truck and familiarizing ourselves with the lay out of it in that manner so as not to freeze ourselves walking the thing the whole day. Anyway, we approached one of the stock ponds and Dad stopped his truck several hundred yards away and glassed it with his binos. It was COVERED with mallards!!! we got excited, backed the truck up some, grabbed our shotguns, and and began to slowly make our way around where we could use the small dam of the pond as cover for our sneak up. We had to circle around quite a ways b/c the dam was not much of one and the large pond was very much out in the open.

As we began to approach the damn we realized we would have to crawl on our hands and knees and bellies the last 200 or so yards or we would skyline ourselves. So, down we dropped and proceeded to crawl through the knee high grass that was soaking wet from the snow that was falling but just the right temp to instantly melt. finally after over an hour of walking, planning, and crawling, we got ready to pop up behind the dam and make our triumphant, albeit freezing and soaking wet, ambush. I remember Dad saying, " I can't believe me pulled off this stalk without them all flying away! Okay, you pop up first, shoot the first one that flies, and I'll be right there with you shooting after that!" I'm super excited and hop up ready to start blasting away and also show my dad I've gotten a little better with my shotgun. Only thing is when I pop up..... nothing happens. All the ducks stay right where they are.

Apparently, unbeknownst to the ranch manager, someone else he had given hunting permission to for that week was a very serious duck hunter. He had put who only knows how many decoys on that pond. Through the light snow/fog and at the far distance my dad had glassed them, they looked very real to him. We had gone to such great lengths to not scare the decoys during our stalk that we never really checked them again, we just made sure we didn't see them fly off.

I think we did get a duck or two later that day, but honestly, the only thing I remember about that day super clearly is our first class stalk of a pond full of decoys.

Nice shooting and setup DW. I never thought about trying to simulate the adrenaline rush.Great idea. What arrows and broadheads ace you using?

Arrows-Cabalaís Crossbow Stalker bolts

Broadheads- I havenít 100% decided. I have some Rage Mechanicals that shoot pretty well and then some fixed blades that a buddy of mine gave me several years back. Thing about those are, I have no idea what brand they are. He gave them to me on my very first xbow hunt. He took two deer that weekend using them with devistating results though. My bow shoots them real, real well too. By the time I got around to asking him what brand they were, he basically said he couldnít remember what he was shooting that season. Leaning towards them though just cause Iím comfortable with them. Although I probably should start using the Rageís instead of some handmedowns I donít even know what are   ;D ;D

After 13 go rounds with skin cancer, going naked is not a option for me.  LOL! Stuart is not very far north of me. Besides, at my advanced age, I would be charged with "assault with a dead weapon"  ;D

hahahahaha!

Got the old Xbow out today to do a little back yard shooting. One more week till bow opener, canít wait! Gonna try and to a little deer/pig combo hunting next weekend, deer in the day, pigs for a little while at night. I believe my location for the pigs should be far enough away from my xbow spot that I shouldnít have to worry about them interfering with each other.

Group below is my last 3 shots of the day where I run a 50 yard sprint in between each shot. While itís not an exact replica of the adrenaline by any stretch, itís the closest thing Iíve heard of to simulate the excitement of a deer stepping out in bow range... Once I sit down I give myself a maximum of 3-5 secs to line up the shot and fire.

How much longer do you have till your first (or next) hunt?

Neat thread to revive. I use different bullets for different guns, but acrosss the board Iíd say Nosler is my most used brand with Barnes and Hornady in a tie for second. The Accubond is my most used Nosler bullet. I use it in my .308, .270WSM, and both of my .257bees.

Might post this under the "Rifles" section of Weatherby Products or "Around The Campfire" for some more views.

Aggressive pigs, that'll be a memorable hunt! I've seen piglets come back and lick up blood form a downed pig before but I've never seen mature adults start to cannibalize one that quickly!

Awesome! Really good pic too! Glad to hear she likes the rifle. Got a little hunt breakdown description for us?

Well, it looks like I won't make it to the range until I get to California. I've got so much to get done for the move. Once I'm settled in, I will hit a range & get it sighted in. I've been picking up a little ammo here & there, and have 6 boxes. Can't wait to go shooting!!!!!!!

Good luck with everything and give us a report when you get out to put a few on paper!

Cool rifle! Got a first hunt planned for it yet?

Yes sir off for a Mule Deer hunt on Tuesday,

I tried a long string of 130 Accubonds in my 6.5-284 with Reloader 26 starting at 53.0grs and going up in .2gr increments, no pressure signs.

53.0-2797
53.2-2841
53.4-2821
53.6-2833
53.8-2859
54.0-2866
54.2-2895
54.4-2894 seemed to be fairly close, so ill start at 54.2 with some 3 shot groups
54.6-2889
54.8-2916
55.0-2951
55.2-2961
55.4-2965
55.6-2976
55.8-2991
56.0-3004

Also tried some 143gr ELD-X with 54grs of R26 and got 2860fps and a .2" group
soon as I went to 54.5 it opened up to 0.65" and then at least 55gr it went to 0.75"

I recently switched to the factory loaded 143 ELD-X in my 6.5 creed. Itís my primary nighttime hog rig. Havenít  shot any game with it yet  but the gun sure seems to like them.

Good luck on the mule deer hunt, hope to see some success pics! You may have already said and I missed it, where are you headed for it?

I wasn't going to weigh in on this but, I'd feel better about someone who advocates muzzle brakes who could actually spell it. They reduce recoil for sure. I have several. The claims made here are somewhat inflated. It's a personal preference.

Oops.  :-\ :-\  Iím guilty as well. Suppose I just looked at the video and went with it...
