Reloading / Starting my load development for 340 WBY
« on: April 17, 2024, 03:04:26 PM »
340 WBY owners... any words of advice? I have 3 powders I'm trying. IMR 7828 SSC, RL-22 and H4831 SC. The bullets I have are 225 gr TTSX, 250 gr LRX and 250 gr Accubond.

3.240"

I've noticed this bullet isn't jump sensitive at all in my rifle.

I was able to get repeatable half MOA or smaller with 69.5 gr of RL-22 in my 257 Weatherby. Velocity is right at 3500 FPS. I'm ready to go deer hunting!

In the 90's my dad was given a Mark V Deluxe in 340 WBY. At the time he was a new reloader and didn't have a good shooting setup (bags). He could never get anything below 1.5 inch groups with it. He eventually traded it in for a 300 WBY. He has told me that it was his biggest gun regret.

Yesterday I got my Mark V Deluxe in 340 WBY. A node to my dad's gun 30 years ago. I'm confident I will get sub MOA with it. The Mark V Deluxe is easily the most beautiful rifle IMO.

Reloading / Re: anybody using Staball 6.5 in Accumark 30-06

I've loaded 6.5 Staball in a Winchester XPR in 30-06. I loaded up the 190 gr ABLR. The gun loved the bullet and it was moving for a 30-06. I was able to get up to 2820 FPS.

Primer is a Fed 215 and the seating depth is 3.563" which is the max I can go with my magazine.

RL-22 was the magic for my gun. I'm getting half MOA with it! Thanks

I verified my RL-22 load of 82 grains at 3360 FPS. Last time it shot a half MOA group... this time it's even better! I thought my 3rd shot went over the paper. Got it back and realized it went into the second hole.

Reloading / 257 Weatherby reloading 110 gr Accubond

I finally was able to order some 110 gr Accubonds to reload. Has anyone reloaded the 110 gr Accubond? Has it been picky or did you find a load pretty quickly? Did you load it to the book COL? I have a bit more room in my magazine to load it out farther. Just curious if that will help.

Reloading / 300 WBY loves 175 gr Barnes LRX
« on: November 06, 2023, 01:13:36 PM »
For 2 years I've been using handload 200 gr Accubond out of my 300 WBY at a velocity of 3100 FPS. At best I can get 3/4 inch groups with it. I did get an elk a month ago with it and the elk was DRT. Last week I decided to try the 175 LRX with RL-22 and 82 gr. It gets me a velocity of 3360 FPS and half MOA. Looks like I will need to switch to the 175 LRX now.

Last week I posted that I bought some 135 gr Berger Hybrid target bullets for my 1in10 twist 257 Weatherby. It appeared the bullets were stable and that I would update you on what I got for groups. Here is my update... With 64 gr of IMR 7828 SSC I got a velocity of 3200 FPS. This was not a max load and I think I could get over 3300 FPS. As for the groups... meh. My first two shots were right next to each other and the 3rd was the flyer. I will be doing more tinkering to see if I can get this sub MOA.

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Doing the Impossible (257 WBY)
« on: November 03, 2023, 10:24:40 AM »
A year ago I saw a YouTube channel try out a 165 gr Accubond LR in his 1in10 twist 270 WSM. I talked with him and he told me that not only did it stabilize, but that he got great accuracy out of it. So 5 months ago I bought some 165 Accubond LR for my 270 Winchester. To my surprise I found great results. I have a load with H4831SC that get's my just under half MOA. I tested the load out to 800 yards and it performed incredibly well. FYI I am shooting up at higher elevation which I believe is the reason I've had success. By the way I think a 270 WBY with a 165 gr ABLR would be incredible. Someone should try it.

Berger is now making target bullets in 25 caliber. I've always thought that if you had a fast twist 257 WBY... it would be incredible as a target cartridge (minus the poor barrel life lol). Well earlier this week I decided to buy some Berger 135 gr Hybrid target bullets. Can't find any load data so I started low and did a ladder test to find my max. I did 63, 64, 65 and hit pressure at 66 gr using IMR 7828 SSC. The picture below is the "group" of those shots. First two shots were the top ones. Obviously this isn't a good group, but it is a ladder test after all. Tomorrow I will be shooting for groups. I think it's a really good sign that these bullet holes aren't key holing. If I can just get a group under 1 inch I will call it a massive success. I'll report back tomorrow on how it does.

Elk / Spike Elk down with the 300 WBY
« on: October 10, 2023, 04:00:28 PM »
When I don't draw out for Limited Entry Bull elk, I'll go buy a over the counter spike elk tag. I'm hunting with a Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic in 300 WBY. I have handloaded the 200 gr Accubond with a velocity of 3100 FPS.

The night before the opener I heard at least 30 bugles just above camp. So in the morning I decided to just hike above camp for about a mile. That morning I heard bugling from the East and my daughter and I head that way. I made it to the next ridge where the bugling was and some hunters half mile above me were shooting away into the ridge. There was probably 6 shots made. No idea if they eventually hit anything. I look to the south of me which was down the mountain and there is two other hunters 150 yards away.

I decide to just walk up to the edge of the ridge and take a look, I didn't have much hope with hunters all around me. 1 minute later this spike elk came walking 50 yards away from me heading up the mountain. The hunters below me didn't see him because they were a little aways from the ridge. The spike didn't see me and I put one shot a little above the heart. By the time I reloaded I heard the elk crash down into the trees. So he might of taken a couple of steps and dropped.  I know it was just a spike and 50 yards away... but elk are tough and I was happy with how my 300 WBY performed.
