A friend and I have been pondering going out "west" again (we live in NC and MD respectively) but the cost has gotten silly expensive. Fortunately we enjoyed our mule deer/elk/pronghorn hunting years ago when prices were manageable for the working man. So, you don't have to worry about us hunting west of the Mississippi anymore.  ;)

A few years back I had the opportunity to invest in a 70 acre tract of cutover land that joins mine that gives me a total of about a 100 acres to play on. Cost was less than $500 an acre and it was the best investment I ever made. Now it has a 900 yard rifle range with steel and paper targets, several deer stands, a duck blind, and even wild turkeys.

And what about the prices of land out there? Geez! And a lot of it, as my crazy farmer uncle used to say..."wouldn't raise a hard on".  ;D

Good luck guys, enjoy it while you still can afford it, or not. LOL!

Mark V Euromark in .300
Mark V Accumark in .257
Vanguard Synthetic in...
.257
6.5 Creed

I can't recall how many I sold or traded off (like an idiot) over the years. Quite a few Vanguard VGX's

Supposedly she may make a run for POTUS in 2024. I say good luck with that  ;) but the American people have a memory of about a minute. In two years she will be brand new.

If you take the time to check it's a race issue, not a gun issue but the Left will never admit it. Sorry, but that is the truth.  :(

Some friends and I are planning a trip to Venice, La., this coming season. Just wondering if anyone had or is hunting the area and maybe recommend a guide?

Thanks,
Tom

I was raised that if you killed it you ate it. I ain't eat'n no bobcat.  ;)

I haven't the interest or the inclination to sit down and do a literature review on the impacts of bobcat predation on deer or other species of wildlife and as usual there is a lot of unsubstantiated rhetoric and opinions when issues like this arise. I would assume that cars and trucks have a greater impact on deer than bobcats. Just yesterday I passed two dead does on the road going to town. Out of curiosity I slowed down and both had been lactating. So, somewhere there are fawns dying of starvation or being taken by predators...bobcats, coyotes, or dogs. Most likely there are more deer killed on our highways in a day than a bobcat could take in a lifetime.
Don't get me wrong, I oppose any regulations that curtail or ban legitimate hunting. I've never killed a bobcat because I never had a need too. I mean, what am I going to do with it after I kill it? I have no interest in a taxidermy mount, don't want to eat it, and as far as I know it's just out there working for a living like everything else. But I don't have a problem with you killing one. I may not like it, and if you killed one on my land I would probably run you off, but that's my right too.  :)

I just picked up a Sig Saur Tango 4, 6-24 X 50 on sale for $600.  It has zero stop and a locking zero and comes in several reticles. It is on a Howa 6mm Creed (I don't think Wby offers that caliber in the Vanguard line?, sighted in at 200 and using an approximate velocity from the box of ammo hit a 12 inch plate at 600 yards with the first shot. Returned to zero without a glitch and I went ahead and dialed in several known range targets and got hits on all of them. I had both the Burris XTR II and the Vortex PST sitting next to it and I would say very comparable to the Burris and the Vortex PST II's in clarity. If I can find another one on sale I will not hesitate to pick it up. It may be overkill for hunting though. But so far I haven't had a problem wacking deer with any of my "tactical" scopes.  ;D

Around the Campfire (General Discussion) / Re: Antler Growrh Deformities

Many times a "droopy" antler is caused by an injury that occurred during the summer months while the antlers were in velvet. They are quite delicate at that time. If the pedicle itself gets severely and permanently injured (say by a vehicle strike) then that particular antler will never have a normal configuration. I've seen many deer with abnormal antler growth on one side and generally it is from some form of trauma on the opposite side of the body.
When I was working I had to conduct annual inspections of captive deer facilities and in once instance a family obtained and raised a fawn buck. When it matured and began growing antlers they had it castrated during the summer months while it was in velvet. The antlers then became permanent and remained in velvet for the rest of the deer's life.

I have two Grade II's in 12 and 20. I assume that the III's have a bit more "bling" in the wood?

What worries me is that it took a lot of time and thought in putting this bill together. Our enemies are well organized.

I second the BoreTech Eliminator. Good product.

I use nylon brushes simply because copper brushes will leave copper residue that shows up on the patch. You will never get a "clean" patch.

Copper brushes will destroy a barrel over time. I'm pretty sure that after 20-30 million strokes you will see wear. What's worse is that I shoot "copper" jacketed bullets all of the time! I guess I should switch to wood or maybe plastic bullets since I know that after 3-4,000 rounds my barrel will be shot. So use nylon brushes and nylon bullets if you can find them.  ;D

Ammo / Re: I think I know why they call them accu..bombs

Interesting thread. I've been shooting 100 grain Ballistic tips at deer for over 25 years in my .257's and I can't recall one deer that wasn't DRT?? Ranges were from 100-450 yards. I try to shoot through both shoulders when possible. Deer can't run away with their front axle broke.  ;D Usually there is a significant exit wound through the far shoulder.
