VGD2 Sporter DBM in .25-06 and Coyotes
« on: January 29, 2014, 10:56:46 AM »
Very excited on my first Weatherby purchase!  Its a Vanguard Series 2 Sporter DBM in 25-06.  I don't even have it home yet but was wondering if I could get a steering toward a possible load for coyotes.  I want to be able to salvage the hides as much as possible for taxidermy so any help would be appreciated!

I would go as small as your rifle would shoot well and use these sample packs to figure out what your new rifle liked and shot the best but in a 1/4 bore I would go 70 gr or below as my 22-250 I am working up some 40,45 & 50 gr but I could care less about the pelts ! My rifle has a 1-14 twist Mark V SVM 22-250 !  A 1-10 twist will probably need a larger bullet to shoot well but not sure if you can shoot a 70 or 90 gr accurately with that twist?

I use Winchester 90 grain positive expanding points but as NMARKANITE mentioned I also am not concerned about the pelt damage
25-06 is a big caliber to try and salvage pelts

Your only hope is to get some light FMJ's and load them down to 2500fps or so.Then you are defeating the purpose of having such a flat shooting round when loaded to it's top potential.I just can't see you not damaging the hides with anything out of the 25-06.Sorry.
