My first big game hunt - anterless moose in Central Saskatchewan

This is just my second year hunting, and I got drawn for an anterless moose, where I live in Saskatchewan. I went out on opening day, and I got my moose! The guy I had gotten permission from had said I could hunt there, but could not take the big cow. He had just taken her down himself when we got there, lol! Anyways, I could've possibly scouted some more for a bigger female, but there were two calves right there, so I took the biggest one, a female. All it took was one shot with my Weatherby Vanguard S2, at about 100 yards. Found a sweet spot, she took about 4-5 steps, gushing blood from her nose, and she was down. The shot exited, so it penetrated both lungs. I gotta say, it was a good feeling to have such a clean kill, being a newbie and all! I also got drawn for an anterless Elk this year, so I hope that I am as lucky with that! :)

Congratulations!  If nothing else, you're lucky to get drawn for both moose and elk. I'm sure the rest was attributed to good shooting. What caliber is your S2?  Good luck.

Thanks! It's a 30-06 spring. 150 grain federal power shot. I've been putting my time in at the range, and it's paying off! There isn't a huge Elk population in my zone, and I'm still working on getting more permission. I saw a young bull this morning right close to an area that I do have permission, so I'm hopeful.

Congratulations on harvesting a fine moose. Good shooting.  I recently harvested my first "prairie" moose and we had our first meal and it was excellent. Hope yours is as good or better.

What zone did you get drawn in for your moose and elk? We have  alot of moose and elk here in zone 45 but no locals got drawn here this year >:(  The elk here this year was pushed into the 2 PFRA pastures earlier on where they won't allow access to hunters until after Nov 1.  Prairie grain fed moose and elk are the best eating by far  ;D
