Best caliber made. I think .338 and elk were made for each other. I also own a 338 Win mag and a 338-378 Weatherby. I really like all three, but the 340 Weatherby is the "goldilocks" caliber of the three. It is just right. The 338-378 is awesome, but you really need a brake to tame it a bit, and brass is hard to find and expensive. Give me a 340 Weatherby with a 26" barrel and I will disappear into the elk woods and never come out. Curt.

I have only taken one elk with my .340. My impression is that the .340 is as close to the "perfect caliber" for elk as you will find.

When I had the opportunity to purchase any caliber I wanted to hunt elk, I chose the .340, and years later it is still my favorite choice for elk hunting. I love it!

I think I remember a post many years ago where Ed Weatherby called the 340WBY his favorite elk caliber. Pretty strong endorsement from a guy who has a very educated opinion. Ed, are you there? Curt.

My wife bought me a 340 to use this elk season. So far, I have really enjoyed the rifle and caliber. its confidence inspiring for sure. Used Wby factory 250 partitions so far, but look forward to reloading for the 340.

I've never felt the need for anything over .30 caliber for elk, but to each his own.
