I Would vote for 7mm

Some great ideas. Many I hadn't even thought of.I expectected to see more going for the ole venerable 30-30 in a lever gun.Think I would go for the 45-70 in a lever gun of some sort and a scope going 1.5-6 or a 3-9 with my old eyes.

I like my "little gun" for this type of hunting. Although I only hunt deer with it, I'd be confident using it for anything from deer to moose including any bears that may be in the area. Its a 45-79 GBL "guide gun" currently with a 3-9 scope that I plan to swap out for a fixed 4.

This is an easy choice for me. I'd use my .358 BLR, topped with 1x4 Leupy. The 35's are very impressive on impact, usually leaving 2 holes & a large wound channel in between.

Moose to Deer would use .300 win. mag Weatherby with 3x9-50 biggest reason is how good it shoot's.

Roger seeing you set the bar at 100 yards I would choose my Browning BAR in 30-06 topped with its Leupold 3-9x40 Scope.
It is probably me least Accurate scoped rifle. But plenty good enough at 100 yards.
And you can never go wrong in America with A 30-06 ;D

"up to 100 yards"  I use a marlin 336 made in 1982 in 35 Rem, has a 1-4 vortex scope with a 30mm tube.  rifle with the fancy hornady ammo shots under MOA at 100yards but is zeroed at 50yards.  I like the scope because most of our deer here are running in front of dogs, with it on 1 power I can shot both eyes open which makes it fast to acquire and with illumination turned on all I see is a red dot and dead deer! if I get lucky enough to find a walking deer 4 power is plenty on deer or bigger game at 100 yards.  I think a lot of people have way to much gun/scope for 100 yard hunting, open site 30/30's have killed many a deer. my 2 cents

The possibilities to answer this are as long as the day but her's my choices.  If I was going with a lever action rifle I'd go with a .358 Winchester or a .45-70 Government since both are good calibers that you can get quality heavy bullets for.  As for a bolt action rifle I'd go with a .300 or .338 Winchester Magnum because they will definitely get the job done, have a vast array of quality bullets, and you wouldn't have much of a problem finding ammunition.  As for a scope I'd go with either a 2x7 or 3x9 Leupold Vari X2 or Redfield Revolution because both have high quality lenses and a reasonable price tag besides let's face it you really don't need a thousand dollar plus twenty power scope to shoot out to one hundred yards.
Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

Although there are several different rifles/calibers I would be very happy using under the conditions mentioned, for big game up to the size of large moose, in heavy timber/thick brush/swampy areas, inside 100-125 yards... the gun I would often reach for would be this:

Stainless steel Marlin "big loop" 45-70 carbine with standard factory-installed ghost ring open sights and/or low magnification Leupold scope

My choice of load would more than likely be this:

Buffalo Bore 350 grain at approximately 2,150 fps (2,070 fps from the stubby 18 1/2" carbine barrel)

This load is a bit much for deer but is an excellent moose and big bear load. It is also quite proficient in dispatching those pesky wild bovine such as Asiatic water buffalo. :)

All this having been said, I'd be just as comfortable with an old bolt action 30-06, souped stoutly with 200 grain Nosler Partitions or 240 grain Woodleigh Weldcore bullets. If big bears are not in the area, hell, just your typical 180 grain "name-your-brand" bullet will suffice... or a handy little .308 Winchester with almost any bullet over 150/165 grains. :)

I have hunted deer for about 50 years in Michigan, Wyoming, New Mexico and Ohio. My favorite 100 yard rifle is a Weatherby 300 with a 210 grain Berger VLD and Leupold vx 2 3-9x50 with heavy duplex. The deer drops where it is shot, no tracking in heavy woods and swamps. I have confidence in it's accuracy to shoot through thru a small opening in brush. This is just my opinion which is based on the comfort I have with this combination of Wby.300, Berger 210 VLD and Leupold with heavy duplex.
I think everyone commenting here has the same confidence in their rifle/scope/bullet as I have in my choice.

I'd plump for either my Ruger No1 in .460 S&W spitting out 275 grain Barnes XPB's @ 2550 FPS. Wearing a Leupold 1.75-6x36 or just my Win 94 in good old 30-30 with the same scope.
