I think it will be awhile before anybody will know real world numbers on either of the new nosler cartridges as they are brand new and are aimed at first time buyers to sell new razzle dazzle rifle cartridges as were the craze of the short magnums and ultra magnums,thats my opinion anyway,so far from what I have read the 26 is falling short of what they claim it will do,i wont be getting rid of my 7mm bee to go buy one !

I agree with Southtxkiller's points, especially the parts about being aimed at first time buyers and the razzle dazzle part.

The 26 Nosler is doing almost what the 270 Weatherby has been doing since the end of WWII.  Do the words "nothing really new here" make sense to anyone else? The 28 Nosler, like its smaller caliber brother, is nothing to get me excited since there are plenty of 7mm cartridges capable of making bullets move fast.

I think this is just another point showing us just what kind of knowledge Roy Weatherby had creating his cartridges.
7mm Weatherby created around the 1940's, 7mm RUM created in 2001 approx. 60 years later, and 28 Nosler created in 2014, around 70-74 years after Roy's. I just pulled up some factory loads for the three and just wanted to show the difference in 70 years of development. The RUM and Nosler do seem to shine a bit more in the lighter weight bullets but the difference is pretty minimal for the 6-7 decades between them and with technology and advancements in bullets and powders, I thought it was another nod to what Roy really knew creating these cartridges back when he did!

175 gn Factory 3070 fps

7mm RUM

28 Nosler

175 gn factory 3125 fps

Imo there is not enough difference to justify the 28 Nosler. I will keep my 7MM Weatherby Mag.

Although I think the new Nosler cartridges are cool...it probably isn't enough to get me to sell my existing rifles and buy a 26 or 28 Nosler. No doubt, they are well designed and high performance cartridges, but most people probably don't need that level of performance.

I have a couple of friends that have a 7mm STW and a 7mm RUM - they are pretty overbore and honestly, the 7mm Remington Mag or 7mm Weatherby Mag are about perfect for the .284 bore size.

The 26 Nosler?  Well...I have a .264 Winchester Magnum and I think it is a really cool cartridge, but I think there are "better" (more useful all-around) cartridges. All of this depends where you live/hunt and what you go after of course, but here in Wyoming I think the most useful bore sizes are 7mm and .30 cal for big game. I have three 7mm rifles and four .30 cal rifles..but if I could only have one, it would be the .300 Winchester Magnum.

I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't trying to sling mud towards new ideas from different manufactures,thats how we got to where we are today by trying new ideas,some work,some don't,thats what makes a horse race exciting,if you want one of these new cartridges please get one and let us all know what the numbers are in real life,just don't go in to it thinking its going to be blowing other existing cartridges off the map,maybe in a dedicated long range rifle with a 30 inch barrel the 28 might show some worth while gain,but then you can say the same thing about the other sevens that are already available,theres only so much velocity you can get out of a certain bore size and after that your just burning powder,roy figured that number out seventy years ago and they been trying to beat him ever since ! maybe its time for weatherby to introduce a 257,6.5,270,and 7mm based off the 378 case and that would pretty much stop all the arguments !  ;)

One thing I do find intriguing is Lazzeroni's .284 Firebird. When comparing the WBY, RUM, and Nosler, the case capacities vary but, velocities stay relatively close and like southtex mentioned it would seem as there's just a certain amount of velocity to get out of a certain bore size and Roy figured that out a long while ago but, Lazzeroni really did boost those numbers with his 284, that thing is fast!
140gn=3700fps
170gn=3400fps

I agree that the lazzeroni cartridges have some impressive numbers but I have never found anyone that owns one to see if the numbers they list can actually be achieved from a hunting rifle with a 26 inch barrel  ???

The Lazzeroni round is listed in QL with a case capacity of 121gr, and online discussions show it between there and 130gr of H2O capacity.  Using the values in QL, it shows velocities in the 3800+ range for the 140gr Nosler Accubond, and aroudn 3050 for the 175gr ABLR.  That's with a 24" barrel, and at pressures in the 66kpsi range, which is within Lazzeroni specs.  Bear in mind this case is .580" at the case head, so it's bigger in diameter than even the 404Jeffrey based stuff like the RUMs and the 375Ruger.  Bear in mind, also, that the barrel life on the Lazz is probably something like 400-500rds, optimistically, under best conditions, as this thing is burning between 95 and 115gr of powder per round, through that .284cal bore.

thanks for the info duby,i have no plans of getting one I just often wondered if there numbers were real,i also didn't know that there case head was that big,thats bigger then the ultra mags ! I looked up there ammunition and it says right on the box that velocity is with a 28 inch barrel and a 1-14 twist for the 308 warbird,i also read that there readings are recorded at 3000 feet elevation instead of at sea level,I guess there appealing to some people since midway has factory loaded ammunition for sale but I think im gonna stick with the weatherby magnums !

In my opinion, Nosler is building their 26 and 28 because they can. Nosler wants them to be a player in the market. The market will decide what lives and what dies. There probably aren't overall big sale numbers being set for any 7mm caliber magnum except for the 7mm Rem Mag. I really doubt the 28 Nosler is going to be much different than the other 7mm magnums.
The 8mm Rem Mag was made not because we had to have it, but because it could be done. I won't be surprised when the 30 Nosler and the 33 Nosler are unveiled, but I doubt there will be a 32 Nosler. The bullet manufacturers have something to do with the low variety of 8mm bullets, but so do the firearms manufacturers. The market drives the machines, so to speak.

Guy's were already making this round before Nosler decided to That's probably why they did it. in fact guys are making all kinds of Nosler wildcats off of the 26. So far I've seen 284, 270,30 and 338 just waiting for a screaming 25 or 6mm
