1971 Winchester model 70 308

Hey there, I need help identifying the model type or variation of Winchester model 70 that I have. Here are the specifics
Winchester Model 70 the serial number starts with a G and according to Winchester it was made in 1971 post 64. It has a raised cheek piece and a jeweled bolt, it has a round barrel with front and rear sights, the front sight is bead type completely hooded, and I believe the barrel length is 22". The caliber is 308 and the butt plate looks like it's plastic. The stock is checkered but the fore end is plain. I am the second owner of this rifle, could this have been a custom order that the original owner placed? I've checked online and from what I read, the 308 caliber is specific to feather weight models but this rifle has the above extras. Thanks

Sounds like your basic 1971 model 70 to me. The featherweight had a 20 inch barrel.  They made them with 22 inch barrels in everything that wasn't a magnum and some 24s too in 270 if I recall correctly.

Yep, standard Model 70.  Pretty much goes without saying that 1971 is post 1964.

Sounds like a standard rifle. I don't think they made featherweights that year. Featherweights had 22 inch barrels. The carbines made for a short time had 20 inch barrels. You might try asking on a Winchester forum.

I had a mod.70 XTR in 7mag with serial # G146XXXX and was told by Winchester it was a 1979 production model. My rifle had a gloss type stock, rich bluing, barrel length 24" and had a black ebony end cap.( not a featherweight) I believe the XTR model was a bit more high end. BTW, mine also had the hooded front sight, and was a push feed. Yours does sound like the standard mod.70 of the day.

Could be a model 770 rather than a model 70 they were a bit cheaper version on the same action mostly made up for big retail stores.

I have the same rifle in .308 but believe it to be a 1970, it is a standard length action and also has a G serial number. after doing some research I was told winchester did not start making short actions till the middle 1970's don't know if thats fact or not. I bought it used in 75 or 76. this rifle has always shot very well and is not to particular on what i feed it.
