finding a Mark V 22-250
« on: July 17, 2015, 02:41:27 PM »
Hey guys,

A few weeks back, I made the mistake of shooting a couple rounds through a friends 22-250.  I cannot stop thinking about it. Turns out, my wife loves the caliber and would like one too.  A little research later, I learn that there is a Mark V option out there on various sites.  I know the good folks at Weatherby stopped making it back in 94.

Here are my questions.
Japan made or German made?
How much difference is there?
What would a decent price be?  the different sales site very from 1595-1995.  Guy here at work wants 2200 for one without the scope.

Thanks for the help to my very novice questions.

I have a few and it pretty much depends on one's preference.Keep a German made one in excellent shape and you could shoot for years and still make your money back or more.Really the Japan made rifle will do the same for you also.Like I said it's one's preference.A 26 inch,German made rifle will cost you the most with a Japan made with 24 inch barrel being the cheapest.Relatively speeking cheap. The Jap made,24 incher will run you 1650 shipped I'd think.I'll PM you and we can discuss.

I personally like the 26 in barrel for a slightly faster shooter for the 22-250 round.May as well get all you can out of it.So I would go with the German.

At that price he probably is. All the post mentioned was the caliber and action.

It told me Varmintmaster when he said Weatherby stopped making them in 1994.

Thank you for the replies.  I had to take the youngest to camp and have been out of town.  Yes, the varmintmaster.

I am not too picky as to Jap[an or Germany, just wanting to understand the difference.

Thank you

There is no noticeable difference in the rifles from German to Japan manufacture. The Japan made rifles may have a little better figure in the stock, but I have seen some very nicely figured German stocks also.

The JP Sauer and Sohn made Varmintmasters are more collectable, and certain ones will bring a premium because of this. They can have trouble with their trigger mechanisms from the pewter housings though. Also people know how valuable they can be and piece rifles, stocks and different parts together so you have to watch out for this.

I have sent you a PM with my email address. You can contact me if you are interested in talking more about acquiring  one.

If you think it was a mistake shooting the varmint master in 22-250 you dang sure don't want to shoot one in a 224 weatherby ! You will be looking for two

Finding a "good quality" Varmintmaster in either 22-250 or 224 Weatherby will be difficult AND expensive! I have a Japanese made 22-250, 26 inch No. 2 contour barrel with unbelievable wood that I bought in the mid 80's. Accuracy with any bullet at or under 55 grains is coyote-minute-of-angle out to 450 yards.  One of Roy's best ideas! Quality between German versus Japanese made is of little importance; wood on the Jap made, I believe, is of a slightly higher appearance. Cabela's Gun Room had a recent 22-250 that sold for $2700! No Scope!  If you can find one in "good shape" BUY IT! It is truly the perfect walking Varmintmaster rifle.

I found one for you, it's a Varmintmaster that's in good shape with a Simmons 4x12 Presidential scope, on gunborker.com.  There's no reserve and the bids start out at $1,695.00 and the auction ends on 08/16 at 10:15 P.M. Eastern time.

Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

Realizing I never updated here.  I went with the one my coworker was offering.  He brought it in and of course it was beautiful.  The package was 22.250 Varminmaster w/ Zeiss Conquest scope 6.50-20 50mm objective.

I have shot it a few times.  It needed to be cleaned well (boretech did wonders) which a I did two weeks ago.  Last night after some adjustments (sighting) it is beginning to be what I was hoping for.  Peppering the bulls eye at 100 yards.  There are still some minor adjustments with sighting in to be done, but I would not hesitate to shoot at a four legged target where it is now.  Just being picky wanting even tighter groups.

Three weeks until I am in the field!
