You will love the 257 Wby. If you have the itch for a Weatherby, might as well get a Weatherby caliber. :o
The 257 is a pretty impressive cartridge too, pushing a 100 grain bullet at 3,602 feet per second. It may loose some speed out of a 22" barrel, but it would still produce DRT results. "Barnes 100 TSX brass, Rem mag primers, and H1000 @ 73 gr min and 78 gr max." Ask Roger about that load.

I am averaging 3713 fps with one that has a 26 inch barrel and the components Dan listed.

You can't go wrong with the 270 as a do-all caliber here in the states. That said, if you are looking at Weatherby why not a a Weatherby caliber? My vote goes to the 257 Wby. Good luck with your search and decision.

Going back to the original ? .308 or .270? I'd go with the 270 win. Shoots flatter, better sectional density, it is inherently accurate, and three bullet weights are all you need.

"RE: .308 or .270 more practical for my situation?" Of the two caliber choices, the 270 win. Hawk45, in your original post (Oct 7th) you were leaning towards the 308, and you got a lot of advice, have you purchased a rifle yet?

My go to gun is a .300 Wby, usually my first choice. Weight, recoil, noise, etc... is all small potatoes when performance counts. Better to have too much and not need it, rather than to not have enough and need it. I never thought as a .300 as a target round...but I've always had a soft spot for the .300 magnums, I own lighter, but none out perform the .300 any day, my LONG shot is at best a bit more than 100 yards, and besides the .300? I'll take my PA-08 with the slug barrel and that works for me. But, personal preference is just that, personal, and I'd never sway anyone to think my way. I do have a vanguard in .270 Win and one in .30-06 (waiting for my .257 Wby to come in), I have those simply for ease of getting ammo, no more, no less. I have never been able to jump on the .308 band wagon, that day will come when I buy one of those 'buck head' brand rifles, too much hype and overselling in my opinion. I'd rather get a 7mm-08 than a .308

Hawk45 posted his decision in the Rifle section. The 270 is good all round choice.

Broke my Weatherby cherry. Got my Wilderness in .270 Win all setup and loads done. Just need a few hours of range time to see what she likes.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the .300 Win Mag. I believe that it is one of the most versatile calibers around. Find the right ammo load and youre golden.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the 270 Win. That was the first Weatherby I ever bought, she'll  swill down any ammo I feed her and she's fearless in all engagements.

I JUST got a .270 Win and i havent even fired it yet. Its my first one and from what i see its a very well liked round, I've got that and the .257Wby to try out this year and it feels as though ive gotten two very well proven calibers, now if i can just get the opportunity to use them i will be set, other than choosing which to use

The 270 Win (if its a Weatherby) may surprise you with all the different ammo, brands and weights, that it will shoot sub moa accurately. I also have a New 257 Wby thats waiting to reach out and touch something when the time comes. Regardless of which rifle I choose to take on a hunt as my primary rifle, the 270 is always the back up, unless the 270 win is the primary ;) , then I choose between a Mark V 270 Wby, 300 Wby, 257 Wby, or a 7mm Rem mag as a back up. So many choices  ;D :D :)

The .270 is a Weatherby. I picked it up at a pawn shop for $150, it was in the way back, and honestly i dont think they realized what they had. I put on DNZ mounts with an older model Nikon scope, (i happened to buy a bunch of Nikon scopes through AAFES when they were clearing out their stock), I had the bolt worked on because of the recall, changed out the stock to the Griptonite, and im starting with 130 grain American Whitetails because they really work .beyond expectation in my 30/06 Vanguard. I just need to get some time to get to know it. Im having the dilemma of so many choices now
