180 boat tail hornady interlock product code 3072 works great in mine and my buddys 300 wby for deer (all he has).
+1 I've used that bullet at 75 and approx. 200 yards, and the meat loss was minimal. The bullet works well at close and long range, with the speed its carrying at the point of impact. My experience, so JMO.

Thanks for all the input. I'll recommend the 180 gr Interlocks. Those fit well in his price range. I've had great success with interlocks in my 25-06, so I've got no issue suggesting that bullet at all.

I had a .300 Win that i took many deer with using 180 grain soft points from a Savage 110, ive passed that rifle on and use a .300 Wby as my primary. Call it luck, karma, what have you, but ive made clean in and out shots with the .300 Win and i like the results, ive heard the stories and comments: "blows craters in deer", "any meat left?", "what do you need a cannon for?" But on the opposite end, you might mention using a .257 Wby and hear or read " thats too light!" I can tell from prior posts you can place a shot, I personally love shooting 180's out of the .300's, it MAY be heavy, but its versatile and can be used all the way up to moose. My heart will always belong to the .300's, and in time I think youll find how much that caliber with the 180 soft points can do and youll be sold

I used my 300 Wby with 180 grs Accubonds (reloads), and didn't have any issues with GA size deer.  Meat damage was minimal, and the deer that I shot never took a step. Is it overkill, we can argue that statement until the cows come home.  I've also shot GA deer with my 257 & 7mm Wbys, and didn't regret it one bit. I also have a 375 H&H, and one day I will hunt deer or hog with this rifle, because I am not going to Africa soon enough and I like to hunt with all my rifles.  ;D ;D ;D

165 grain sierra BT or a 165 grain speer BT. I reload for a couple friends and one rifle likes the sierras and the other likes the speers, cant really see any difference on the game that is shot. Not a lot of excessive damage and an exit wound.

Catskinner, if you are using 180 grain barnes on deer you could be using to heavy of a bullet. A friend used the same bullet on an Antelope and it didn't open up much, ran a long ways. Used the same load on elk and could not believe how well it performed. Could be you need to use 150 or 165 grain because barnes is a stout bullet. IMO

I agree, if you just hunting deer or smaller game, the 150-165gr barnes are better suited in the 30 cal's. But my 300's are mostly used for elk and moose, so I load the 180's in them. It just happened, that is what I had at the time, when I shot those deer. I usually use one of my smaller caliber rifles when I'm just hunting deer size game.
