338-378 Brass Dimensions?

338-378 Brass Dimensions?
« on: January 07, 2017, 06:32:33 PM »
First off I'm new to loading for the 338-378 but not to reloading. And this may be a dumb question. I just purchased 6-20 round boxes of new in the box Weatherby brass and so far every round I've measured the neck is way out of spec. It measures pretty consistently at .375 to .377 outside diameter and .347 to .349 inside diameter.  None of the brass looks to be tampered with or previously sized. I'm I missing something or overlooking something.

Yes I always run new brass thru my neck sizer die first. Then make sure they are all trimmed to equal length as well.

Ok thanks for the info. I know that it is New brass not once fired. But I've also never had to do anything but run the expander ball through the neck on new Weatherby brass. But I guess I'll try sizing it.

Did you buy it in a retail store or an individual?Have you shined a light in it to see if there is any residue in them?Once fired brass can be deprimed without sizing then washed and you'd never know it had been fired.

Yes bought from a retailer. And there is no residue of any kind in casings.

I'm guessing it's Weatherby headstamped brass?Could be some that made it thru without being sized. It's a X-File.

I do the same thing, because I have got new unfired brass before that was out of spec's.

I used to do the same when I used Win, Rem, Hornady brass. I use Lapua, Norma, and Weatherby now, after reading this I better start checking the new Weatherby brass

It doesn't matter what brand of brass I am using, even when using the premium stuff I still always run them all thru the neck sizer. You just never know if one has slipped thru and is out of spec.

I got a chance to run some through the sizer today. It worked to get it down. I've just never run into this before on Weatherby brass, other brands yes but not Weatherby. I guess I'll have to start looking at it closer.
Thank guys for your time.
