My first rifle is a .300 Weatherby purchased from a neighboring farmer when I was 17 back in 1971. About 30 years ago I had a muzzle brake put on it. I did so because it pretty much eliminated muzzle jump and enabled me to see the bullet hit. It is definitely not too much gun. I have shot everything from coyotes to whitetails and bears to elk.
It is balanced and easy to shoulder and shoot.
I have heard all the opinions from people who shoot deer with a 30-30.
I usually listen and smile. If they like using that caliber, so be it. I like mine. You will enjoy your .300 Wby I'm sure of it.
If you are arguing with an idiot and someone passes by, they don't know who's the idiot.

I am another 300 Wby fan.  I've used it to hunt deer in South Dakota, Georgia, and for plains game in Africa, and love it.  It think it's an all around caliber.
