Rookie post for 185 berger

I'm looking for a good load for 185 grain classic hunter Berger. I'm shooting a ultralight 300 Wby.  I have 4831 and 7828 ssc on hand but don't mind changing. I'm not a long range hunter but really enjoy shooting with some of my students at a 1000 yard range. I'd appreciate any advice for a good hot load.

you need to let your rifle decide what it likes, but I would try the 7828 frist.

Either of the powders you have should work although I have moved away from both. I use H1000 with most of my magnums with great success, plus it is not heat sensitive. Good luck and keep us informed.

Just about the only thing I'd caution you on is setting your expectations for an ultralight rifle at 1000yds. Kind of working at cross purposes, so to speak.

As for powders, I've had excellent results out of H1000 and IMR7828ssc under 180gr bullets in my 300.

I talked with Berger and they said the classic hunter was not as finicky as the VLD regarding oal. Would you guys recommend buying a hornady oal gauge before I loaded these?  Berger said matching to factory length would be fine but is this a tool I should have anyway?
Thank you for your advice!

If I understand your question, all you need is a caliper to measure the factory ammo length. And then use that measurement to seat the Bergers to a similar length. The Hornady tool you are talking about? is used to determine freebore. I don't use the Hornady gauge, maybe someone else will chime in.

T, wouldn't hurt to have the Hornady tool, it measures from the ogive so any discrepancies in bullet length are usually overcome.  Powder choice is trial and error, no two rifles will like the same exact load recipe.  I'm with some of the others, I use H1000 and like the bonus of it being temp stable.  Good luck

Thank you for the advice. I'm out in the country but plan on heading to the big city this weekend and get some of the recommended powder that many of you like. (H1000). I'll try the powders I have also and if the weather cooperates.
Thank you and I am excited about having a Weatherby again. I had to sell my mark V 13 years ago as a newlywed to pay rent.
Thanks again for all your help!
