New Accumark in 300 WIN

New Accumark in 300 WIN
« on: February 23, 2017, 05:05:41 AM »
I was finally able to pick up my new rifle. I had a friend mount the scope, loaded up a few test handloads, grabbed a box of factory ammo and hit the range.

She shot the Hornady Precision Hunter excellent. Easily Sub-MOA. (Sorry. I almost never actually measure groups and forgot to take pictures. But the target had 1x1 squares all over.) Once zeroed, I started testing my handloads. I was shooting 212 gr ELD-X bullets over a light, medium and full charge of H100. Both the medium and full charge shot about a 1 minute group, minus my 1 pulled shot in each 5 round test.

I am more than pleased with this rifle. She's topped with a Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44 mounted with Talley's lightwieght mounts. The rifle shoulder's beautifully, the trigger is amazig and she hits what you point her at. What more can you ask for?

I plan to hit the range Saturday agsin. I'll keep working on the 212 gr ELD-X loads and try some 180 gr Partitions as well. I'm expecting good things from both.

I will say that the recoil is pretty stout. Not unbareable or excessive. But you do notice it. And it's nore than my buddy's 338 LM. But to be fair he's got a 15 lb rifle with a muzzle break. Either way, I put 35 rounds down range in just a couple hours without much trouble. I'm just glad I didn't get the ULW like I'd originally thought.

Congrats Caleb. That is a very nice setup. Shooting great also. That 212 Eld with a .663 BC should be a hammer. Sounds like you are getting set up for your Western hunt. Hopefully you will get to try it out soon on some Texas porkers. That 178 Eld with a .552 bc would be interesting to try also for a little flatter shooter. Good luck and keep us posted on load development.

Congratulations, sweet looking rifle that's a great shooter. What's nice about your 300 win is the wide range of factory ammo available for it if you don't want to reload. Glad my ULW came with an Accubrake!!!

That is a sweet looking rig man! Wonder if going from 212 to 180 will make any felt recoil difference for you?

Nice rifle and congrats on getting it home. Our rifles are twins, only difference is that I have the 4-16x50mm objective. Look back in the pic thread and you can see the groups I was getting with factory match loads. You are correct, the recoil is definitely noticeable but more than livable, especially when you consider that you'll rarely ever shoot more than one round when hunting. Enjoy the new boom stick!

Thanks yall. I was out testing handloads yesterday and finally remembered to take a picture of a grouping. The two flyers were way outside the aberage velocity, so we're counting that as my fault at the reloading bench. Otherwise, I've found my load for 212 gr ELD-X bullets.

I also had something happen I've never seen before. I took 30 test shots. 3 loads of 5 with 212 gr ELD-X and the samw with 180 gr Partitions. I can count 16 holes in the back side of the target. 15 singles and then 1 large hole where half the bullets went. Seems like this rifle is going to shoot generally in the same spot no matter what I feed her.

Very nice rifle and scope combo. Is that a tactical style scope?

It's a Vortex Viper HS-T (Hunting, Shooting, Tactical). It does have the tactical style turrets. The reticle has hashmarks every 2 MOA.

Nice set up. You should be able to reach out and touch your target with that.

That's the plan. I took it out to 500 meters with Hornady Precision Hunter. Hopefully I can shoot further with my handloads.

Well I got my handloads worked up, 212 gr Hornady ELD-X with 75.5 gr of H1000, and I have been stretching ol' girl's legs a bit. I shot a group that measured 4.44 inches center to center at 1,000 yds. Being as I'll never shoot a group like that again, I took a picture. Whatever Weatherby is doing over there in Paso Robles, they're doing it right!

A  3 shot group that measures 4.4" at 1000 yards is great shooting, Congrats! Long as you do your part, that rifle and scope shouldn't give you any excuses for a miss.  ;D Nice shooting!
