Good looking combo. Can't tell by the photo, but there doesn't seem to be much room between the rifle barrel and the bell of the scope. Can you still get a scope cap on there?. I've never owned any thing higher than a 4x16, is clarity ever a problem at dusk or dawn on the high power range? I've seen a few high power scopes on sale recently(Burris, Weaver, Nikon) and was considering one for the 300 Wby, or 270Wby. My shooting doesn't get out past 300 yards most times, just seems like your getting more scope for the money.

I can just get the scope cap on, but I didn't want to go higher, raises my head to far off of the comb. Dawn and dusk, with the 50mm you gather a lot of light but with any of them the higher the power the sooner you loose focus, but you can turn it back all the way to 5 power in those conditions if needed. Optics have came so far in the last few years. I was like you I always had a 3X9 and than got a 4-16X44. I have to say this is one of the best scopes I have ever looked thru for the money

How far out have you stretched your legs with that set up? With a scope like that and a flat shooting quarter-bore, you won't have very many excuses left to use for a miss.  ;)

I know, now excuses now, oh the wind  ;D, just got the scope, will take it out this weekend, had a vortex 4-16X50 HS on it before, it would shoot about a 15"-18" group at 1000 yards. 1000 yards is asking a lot out of that barrel. It would shoot 5"-6" groups at 600 yards. Not sure I will get any better with this scope, I just like the added power and the reticle better

Vortex gen II test today.. Lower left is the aiming point, at the end the black dot was blown off. Adjusted scope 6" right for the second group. Than 6" up for the 3rd group. Than 6" left for the 4th group. Than 20" up for the 5 group. Than down 20" back to 0 for the last group. The scope tracked perfectly. Sorry for the extra shoots on the target, we did a lot of shooting this morning

Why did you choose the vortex? I figure you must have compared it to other brands. Just curious.

Warrant, glass, and the ones I have been around track perfectly when adjusted. This last one has every feature I want. I have had Leupold for years, I have a Zeiss on my 338 which has the rapid 600 reticle which I like for that rifle. I feel the glass is as good if not better than the Leupold and the Zeiss. We compared this new Vortex to a Nightforce , you had to be at a range of over 1 1/2 miles to be able see any diffence, and than it was very little. Vortex is $1000 the Nightforce is $2100

I have Leupold and Zeiss on all my rifles. I just bought a Nikon 3-9x50 for new muzzleloader.
So, the Vortex glass is as good as the Leupold and Zeiss?

You have to compare them, you cant take a low priced one and compare it to a high end one of another brand. But yes I think this new gen II viper is as good as "any" scope I have had, or looked through. A lot of the companies get there glass from the same source, its just their specs that make them better or worse, and IMO vortex has it right. I also compared this Viper pst gen II 5-25X50 vortex with my Nightforce 12-42X56, both being set on 25 power at 1000 yards, with my eye, there is zero difference.
