Good article and a reasonable explanation on why not to use reduced powder charges in a cartridge like the 6.5-300. Also interesting to hear that he was able to achieve "Weatherby factory-load velocities" with his handload formula and his assessment on the 6.5's sharp recoil.

Quote "It appears that Hodgdon US869 powder is the 6.5-300 Wby. Mag.’s ticket to happiness. A charge of 91.0 grains under the Swift Scirocco II duplicated factory-load velocities."

Quote "On paper, it kicks slightly less than the .300 Winchester Magnum loaded with a 180-grain bullet, but in reality, its recoil is so sharp that, to me, it feels worse.I attribute it to the large amounts of powder being burned and the extremely high velocity exit of the bullet. But I wouldn’t say it’s truly vicious, and the cartridge’s spectacular ballistics make it worth it."

I know that recoil is subjective, but I'm pretty sure this guy shoots as often as some of us, with a lot of varried calibers. Following quote is from one of our Nation forum members,"Oregonmarkv" on recoil of the same 6.5-300 from a similar article in Field and Stream that eford posted.
Quote " I want to add that writer of the review was a little off on the recoil and wind drift, recoil is more like 28 lbs and drift with a 20 mph cross wind is about 24 inches. Maybe he was quoting recoil figures with a brake then it would be about right, I shot mine without the brake once and it definitely gets your attention, you need to hold on to the front or it will fly off the front rest." (Field and Stream article he's disagreeing with)
I would like to hear opinions from guys that actually own and shoot 6.5-300's and their experiences.

Like many others here, and agree to disagree, i havent fired one of these, but as a long time user of the .300 Wby, .300 Win mag, .375 H&H and .416 Taylor, i have never used a brake. I agree that recoil is indeed subjective, i myself posted where i thought my 20 gauge 3 inch slugs had more bite than my 12 gauge counterparts. Ive just always accepted recoil, i figure if im getting a large caliber, thats just part of the package. I was seriously mistaken the first time i took the .416 to the range. I fired my grouping and was pleased, the rangemaster asked what i was shooting and could he give it a go? Sure, he fired, smiled, and said that it was so smooth. It has a heavy barrel, it is very heavy forward, and i feel its more like my muzzleloader, a push instead of kick. Id like to try a 6.5 to see, but now im more focused on a .240 Wby to round my options out. But, i DO like big and different, so im thinking. The one time i felt wicked recoil was when i was in my 20's, i was at the range and there was this really old man there, he had a nice leather take down case and was putting a rifle together, i was in awe. It was an old double rifle in .450 NE. He took one shot with it, i went over and talked to him, he said he was too old to shoot it and this was his last shot with it, he was passing it down. He asked me if i wanted a try and i said sure, it was a work of art, the wood was beautiful and it was pristine, he gave me 2 rounds, i fired the 2 shots and felt like my cheek was going to fall off, i realized it had no recoil pad and it was incredible. He asked if i liked it and of course i did, i know ill never be able to own one, but im glad to have had the chance to fire one, it was awesome and my shoulder was purple for days and i loved it!

Has anyone used the US869 powder in their 6.5-300's and gotten close to the Weatherby stated velocities for the round?

Danno, US869 is all I am using in mine. 140G Accubond at 3400fps and 1/2 to 3/4 1nch groups in my ULW that has been free floated and bedded. I have pulled bullets from two different factory loads and they are using about the same amount that I have used to run different bullet weights over the screens. Factory powder looks just like US869.

I forgot to add the factory 127g had 93.4g of powder and the 130g had 91.4g

Is US869 easily available?  I can say I've seen it, but then again I have never looked for this powder.  I'll have to check the two gun stores here in town.  Thanks for the update Oregonmarkv.

Which powder does US869 compare to in the reloading scheme?

US869 and 20N29 have been extremely hard to find where I live, H50BMG is usually available. The US869 is in between H50BMG and the 20N29, with the 20N29 listed as the slowest burning powder. I'm guessing they're hard to find because of there limited use???

I did a quick search and Powder Valley has this powder in 1 & 8 lbs jugs.  I am going to look locally, and if not I'll be forced to get it from PV and the Haz Mat fee.  >:(

I just ordered some more from Midsouth and I believe Midway also has it. It seems to be readily available and about $22lb before the rediculas hazmat and shipping fees.
