240 weatherby on deer

Hey Guys just became a member of Weatherby Nation! Just got my first Weatherby rifle ! I got a 240 weatherby vanguard. I'm excited about it. Can you guys enlighten me on deer killing performance ? How good of a job do the 100grain spitzers do?

I bought a Mark V Lightweight Stainless in 240 Weatherby when they first became available back in the late 90's.  I have killed a number of whitetails with mine.  Most were killed with handloads pushing the Nosler 95gr. Bal-Tip. All went down for the count.  I did kill one with a Weatherby Factory 90gr. Barnes X-Bullet.  Killed like lightning.  Great cartridge! :)

You are going to like the 240 Wby.  Also, if you look around and be patient you can still find their Spitzer brand, for under $40.00.

Oh, and welcome to the Nation.  Enjoy your new rifle!

Thanks Guys. I need to start handloading. I've only ever cranked off some pistol rounds from my Dillon 550B. So it's kinda new to me.

The 85 grain Barnes TSX kills them DRT and doesn't tear a bunch of meat up while doing it.I never shoot anything else.I have flattened a couple big pigs with the same ammo too.Boiler room hits and they go down.Try to run on their sides for a few seconds then still from now on.

As everybody is saying that one is a great deer caliber. I've dumped plenty of deer in Alberta with a 6mm and the 240 is a suped up a bit more so you should have no problem.

I love my 240 Wby. It was the first Weatherby rifle I owned so it will always have a special place in my safe. I've deer hunted with it in the past but never taken a whitetail with it. I did shoot a bobcat with mine and realized the 95gr Nosler ballistic tips were a little too aggressive for my likes. It blew a sizable exit wound on that cat, which would have wasted a lot of shoulder meat on a whitetail.

My theory is that the rapidly expanding bullets like these do better @ ~3000fps or less. And the bonded or partition bullets do better in the quicker rifles and chamberings. Different strokes for different folks though!

I've adjusted and switched to partitions.

I was thinking about trying the partitions myself. I've used Barnes in other rifles and I know they are the real deal for sure. I've just got to take the time to sit and learn to handload. Fellas I appreciate all the welcomes.

given a 24 inch barrel of a vanguard how much speed would you loose over a 26 inch barrel of the mark v?

None. The only thing the extra two inches get you is the potential to possibly stabilize a slightly heavier bullet.

WOW. The extra 2 inches WILL get you more speed with the 26 inch barrel vs the 24. Attached is a link to the Weatherby FAQ page.http://www.weatherby.com/support/faqs.html?SID=6p4q2d5bi333iguhs2vdlavga5

I just happen to have 2 300 Wby's. One has a 24" barrel and the other has a 26" barrel. According to my LabRadar, the difference in velocities is not enough to have any effect on the terminal performance of the rifle. Once you get beyond 175g bullets, the 26" does shoot slightly smaller groups at 300 yards. With 150g bullets, there is no difference.

I think in this case, the Weatherby unofficial moniker of being bigger, better and faster is probably the biggest reason that they go with the 26" barrel. Just my opinion based on real world testing.

In a 300 Weatherby there is probably not much difference, but the more overbore capacity you get the more the longer barrel does help.I haven't looked at the link Terminator posted, but I'd bet it's at least 80 fps per ft.Possibly 100.
