Last firearm purchase of 2017

Since my focus now changes to actual hunting season...I purchased a rifle I've been coveting for a while. One of the few calibers I do not have is a .270 Winchester.

I wanted a "classic" looking .270, so I purchased a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade Maple .270. The maple stock does look a bit retro admittedly, but unique.

I've exceeded my new firearm allowance this year, so I'm done until next spring (and avoid the wrath of my wife!).

No photos yet...being shipped to me. No...no specific purpose. I might chase elk with it next year (if not using horses or miles).

I have to order a Leupold scope through the custom shop. There are very few gloss finish scope options these days.

A true classic and beautiful rifles!  Good luck with it! I do enjoy my model 70's and both are great shooters, just not in such traditional calibers, 7mmWSM and 325WSM.

 I used to have a super grade model 70 in 270 win and traded it in on my 2nd Weatherby. I still regret trading it in because it had the most beautiful piece of walnut I've ever seen on a factory rifle. Looking forward to seeing the maple stock on your new rifle.

I've accumulated a fair number of stainless synthetic rifles over the past few years and they definitely have their utility and purpose. Every now and then, I see a great blued steel/nice wood rifle that I must have.

I like them all...some more than others for specific hunts, however.

I don't know if you have any experience with the .270 Winchester but it's a great caliber and was often referred to years ago and even by some today as a beltless magnum.  I have one in a Vanguard VGX which is extremely accurate, it will group five shots within 1/2 of an inch at 100 yards.  The .270 is a real easy caliber to load because there's lots of different loads that are very accurate and if you don't load for it factory ammo is pretty cheap.  The load I use in mine is a 130 grain Sierra Game King, with 52.0 grains of IMR 4350 and a Remington 9 1/2 large rifle primer.  Years ago I shot a white-tail doe with it at around 100 yards and couldn't believe the damage.  It was a quartering away shot, I hit it behind the shoulder and the bullet with through and it came out in the front brisket.  When I got up to where I shot it there was about a three foot circle of hair on the ground and the deer laid about ten feet away dead as a door nail.  When I looked at the deer there was a two to three inch exit hole in the brisket needless to say I was amazed with the damage it did.  As for Jack O'Conner, that was his pet caliber and killed tons of different animals with it, even some African planes game. You certainly won't be disappointed with it.

With the 270 Win you'll be in fine shape for North American plains game, even elk I've been told, but I've never hunted elk. Several years ago I had a 270 Win that loved the 130gn Sierra Game Kings, 130gn Nosler Ballistic Tips, and 140gn Hornady Interlocks. It did not like the 130gn Hornady Interbond bullets. I think it was their smaller amount of bore-to-bullet contact that made them less accurate compared to the other bullets. The barrel harmonics were different enough with that bullet to make a big change to the point of impact compared to the other bullets.

Most of the hunting rifles I see in the field are 270 Win, 7mmm Rem Mag, or 30-06 Springfield, so you're in fine shape with your new 270 Win. Good luck.

The 270 win is my favorite caliber.  It get's the job done without a lot of fuss.   Maple is a beautiful wood,  add the two together and you have a keeper.

Great choice. The upgraded version of a superb hunting rifle, chambered in an iconic cartridge. Surely Jack O'Connor is smiling. And +1 to Ron's remarks above, the .270 is my favorite round also.

Great choice, I killed my first 11 bull elk with a .270 and 130g partitions before I came down with magnumitise. The 130g bullets are made for a 270, you don't need anything heavier.
