Wow, she sure was eating well. I've never seen a bear with that much fat on them. Did they have a scale to weigh her? She must be over 300 lbs, easily.

Congratulations on taking a great bear Roger. That sow was definitely getting ready for hibernation, and that 45/70 plowed her under. Nice shot placement, and no tracking necessary. Great pictures of the bear and you. Glad your hunt was successful.

I am going to do a shoulder mount with an open mouth.Having a guy in Minnesota do it.The rifle used was a Ruger No 1.Field dressed weight was 248.One friend got one also and we deboned both last nite and they left to drive back with the meat at 4AM.I am at the airport waiting to start back now.

Nice bear . The fat can be used for many things should you choose to save it.

I have not saved any of the fat from the Bears I have harvested, but I know a couple guys who swear it's the best for making pie crusts and pastries.

Great read Doug.
I made it back and picked up my ole dog Ruger at my friends about 11:45 pm last nite. I would highly recommend the guide we went with.Great group of guides, skinner and all the other hunters were super nice also. Most were repeat customers and pitched in and helped with everything. The owners wife and daughter had a big meal cooked for everyone when we came in from the hunt every nite.Me and all the guides stayed up till 12 one nite watching the football game b'sing, and drinking beer at the headquarter building.http://www.mnbearguidesassoc.com/lindleysbearguide/
This will be my last hunt with the Ruger No 1.It is a beauty stainless with a green and black laminated stock. My nephew feel in love with it the first time I took it to Arkansas several years ago. I told him I would give it to him after I killed a bear with it.Mistake.LOL. As Mark asked, I do have a double rifle in 45-70 I can switch to.
