Simple rifles work well

I will never deny the long-range accuracy of a 300 Weatherby. Mine is my favorite rifle and I see no real chance of that changing.
My son has a fairly heavy 308 Win that has served him very well when it comes to hunting on the High Plains. The handloads he uses are scary accurate but he shoots a lot so he knows what is going to happen with bullet drop and the effects of wind and mirage. He took this mulie buck yesterday with his 308 Win in the same large pasture where we have taken eight deer (mulie and white tail) in the past six years. The reputation for that pasture as being a "honey hole" has grown. As far as I know, there was neither a wind or a mirage factor but he still dropped it from 350 yards.
I only wish I was there with him for it.

That's a beautiful muley. Hard to beat a .308.
I love the smell of deer guts in the morning, it smells like...VICTORY!

Thats a really nice 10 pt. Just from the coloration in the face, I'd say he "was" in his golden years, and as they say, "he's as old as he's gonna get." Congrats to your son! (what scope does he have on his 308?)

I have a friend who was an expert marksman in the Vietnam war who loves a .308. He has taken many deer out to 450-500 yards with a Remington 700 in .308. He just has a nack at hitting what he aims at. He uses it on woodchucks, crows and coyotes. He is a great shot because he shoots a lot. I have also seen him not take a shot because, as he says “I can’t kill it from here”. It isn’t that he couldn’t hit it, he just doesn’t think he could kill it. So he doesn’t shoot.

Not always necessary to over-complicate things. I have many, many rifles, but my go to rifle is A Weatherby Vanguard .300 Win Mag with 180 grain ammunition. It has shown the ability to be deadly out to about 500 yards and is reliable and simple.

Very Nice Eric
Give him A congrats from me. Also cool that you hunt where Mule deer and Whitetail overlap. I would love to hunt an area like that.

Danno50: The 308 Win that took the mulie buck has a Nikon P-308 scope. I think it is a 4-12x40mm. I was impressed with one on a different 308 Win, so I got one and now I have a spare scope. That particular 308 Win was the same one he used to get a 4.375" wide, 3-shot group @ 1,000 yards so we know the shooter/rifle combo is good.
