Bullet for 240 weatherby for deer

Guys, I shot a great 4 1/2 yr old whitetail this year in Wisconsin, still weighed 200 #  3 days after I shot it. Shot it with a factory loaded spitzer. The bullet performed great....this time. I have doubts be cause while shooting the gun this fall a round rolled off the bench and hit on bullet on cement floor and bull broke on half. Does this seem like the bullet is brittle to anyone else ? I'm looking for a bullet that will hold up at the velocities this round produces, thinking of a tsx or ttsx for shoulder shots or bad angle shots...thanks in advance, Gary

I have killed a number of Whitetails here in Pennsylvania with my Mark V 240 Magnum.  Most were with handloaded Nosler 95 Gr. Ballistic-Tips.  I did shoot one with a factory load Barnes 90 gr. X.  I recently found a couple of boxes of the Barnes 85 gr. TSX BT bullets and plan to try those in the future.  I believe the load you are referring to is the Weatherby factory 100 gr. Spitzer.  If so they are loaded with Norma's own factory made bullet.  I have heard NOTHING bad about those bullets in any of the Weatherby magnums they are loaded in.  It does sound weird that a bullet would break in half like that however I would be more concerned on how the bullet performed on your buck.  You said it worked great.  Until proven wrong I would continue to use them.  If you can find them the old discontinued Speer 105 gr. Spitzer work great in the 240.  Look for them at gun shows.  If you find any buy them!

I only use the Barnes TSX in my 240.It is true to it's name.The Triple Shock does exactly that.Hits hard and the petals open with razor sharp edges.You may never go back to lead core bullets once you use a box and kill several deer with them

+1 as to what 224King said. I am a HUGE Barnes fan and run them in most of my big game rifles and especially in my Weatherbys. I say give them a go, you wont be dissapointed.

I don't have a 240 but the Barnes are kick ass and accurate in the 257 and 300 Wbys.

You cant go wrong with Barnes and big game, regardless the caliber. Just match the bullet weight to the animal

I contacted Barnes and they said the 85 gr tsx is the ticket. As everyone I think, I've read about the bullet not expanding

What is everyone thought on shoulder thought with the Norma spitzer?  The shot behind the shoulder worked great, 1 hole in dime sized hole out blew top of heart of and made soup of the lungs. I'm just worried about less than perfect angle or shoulder shots

At 240 velocitys I don't think you have to worry about a TSX not expanding, if you are then try the 85 gr partition. Every bullet has some limitations, you could try a bonded bullet too. Lots of choices.

If you shoulder shoot with the spitzer you are going to have a 4 or 5 inch size hole on the exit side instead of 1 inch.

If you handload give Nosler e-tips a try , work great in a 300 bee.

Will the Berger VLD stabilize in the 1-10 twist of factory 240 Magnums?  I know it is a LONG bullet.

I wouldn't knock it until I tried it in my own rifle.I used to shoot a 1 in 12,257 mag and all I heard about was how it wouldn't shoot anything over 100 grain bullets.Wrong!It shot 117 Sierras,120 Speers,and 120 Partitions just as good as it did the 75,87,and 100 grain bullets of any brand.
