Tried out my new 45-70 today.
« on: February 04, 2018, 06:58:32 PM »
I had been looking at a 450 Busmaster to replace my Ruger No 1 in 45-70.But after due deligence researching I decided to go with the .458 bullet compared to the .452 and more speed reloading with heavier bullets.Bought a CVA Scout Stainless that came with a 22.5 inch barrel,25 overall with the KDF brake it came with.Crisp 2.75 trigger pull.Loaded up a one load of H4895 (not the preferred powder) Some H4198 bought that is supposed to work best but didn't get it in time to reload with 300 grain Combined Technology bullets,325 Hornady Flex Tips, and 300 Hornady XTPs.The 100 yd group pictured is with the 300 CT before darkness got me before I could try the others.Very happy with no load development.Scope is a Nikon 3-9 Inline 300 BDC that should be pretty close to the 45-70 for drop.

Did you have a load worked up for your Number 1?  My Dad has one and has been using Winchester factory loads in his with good results.  I haven't tried them on mine, which is an old Marlin 1895, so I don't know if how accurate they are.  I use the Federal 300 grain Hot-Cor in mine and that is pretty accurate.  I'm going to work up a load with the 300 grain Speer Uni-Cores, which is the head in the Federal factory loads I use.
Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

Chris338-378.The No 1 shot the   325 FT so good I never reloaded for it although I probably could have got 200 fps or more by reloading.Got some ordedered to see how they do in the CVA.Pict is of the entrance wound of the No 1 and factory 325s on a bear this year.
Chris:Not bad recoil at all with the KDF brake it came with.

Looks like a nice rifle. You could sum up the .45-70 in two words: BOOM! Splat!
Come and take it.
