Multiple Weatherby 7mm Dud

Multiple Weatherby 7mm Dud
« on: February 18, 2018, 01:29:43 PM »
Recently purchased a 7mm Weatherby magnum.  During break-in I encountered 6 duds in a single box of Weatherby factory 7mm ammo.  Comparing the brass of fired and duds there are solid primer strikes so I have ruled out that as a cause.

Wondering if anyone else has had issues with multiple duds in a single box of Weatherby factory ammo.

Did you try to fire them again?

The first one I just put in the dud box not thinking much about it.  Always a first time I thought as I never had this happen with any of my Weatherby factory ammo before.  So, I actually did try to fire them again, 4 of the 5 did not fire.

contact Weatherby, and see what they say. Just curious what factory load(bullet and weight) was it. I have never had a problem with any factory ammo before, but I don't use a lot of it either, I hand load most of my ammo.

Hi Rob,

They were 139 gr Spire point.

I sent Wby a note in November.  Follow up note 2.5 months later.  Still no reply.  Unfortunate and disappointing.  Just bought a Dillon 550C so guess I will add Wby dies no longer buy their ammo.

Thanks for your reply.

If I were you, I'd call Weatherby and discuss it. But it's your call.

Maybe backing your note up with a phone call would get answers
I have never shot many factory rifle ammo but shoot  quite a few shotgun factory rounds a year and have had this problem with almost all brands at one time. Shooting clays all summer have had issues with most.
The only one that has no problems is the Federal Prairie Storm upland load

Not suggesting anything radical here, just a basic cleaning of the firing pin. Sometimes the grease or oil that rifles are packed in from the factory can collect dirt or dust and keep parts from working properly. You can take the firing pin assembly out of the bolt and flush both with a degreaser. (you don't need to remove the firing pin spring, unless you can see that the spring is broken) An aerosol spray can be used to blow things out. After you degrease those parts, wipe and dry them off completely, and add a light grease to the firing pin spring and re-assemble the bolt. Put a light coat of oil on the bolt. (I don't think the factory ammo is the problem jmo)

Being that the rifle is new, you may not feel that you should have to do any of this, in which case, as others have suggested, call Weatherby directly at 1-800-227-2016 and ask for the Service department and they'll be glad to help you resolve the problem.

I agree with everyone else, give Weatherby a phone call, and talk to them directly. I'm curious now, it's been 3-4 months since this happen, have you tried any other factory ammo in the rifle?? Just to see if it's just that box of ammo, or maybe something with the rifle, like Danno50 has posted? If you can post some pics of the primer strikes on the dud ammo, and the box they came in. We are a curious bunch around here, I'm sure a few of us would like to see a few pics of this.

Thanks to all that have replied.

I will take your advice and give them a call.  Perhaps benefit of the doubt that it got lost in email hell.

The thought of cleaning is interesting and perhaps the one and only time on my 7 different Weatherby rifles that I own that something wasn't just right out of the box.

I did shoot 150 gr Partitions through it after the 139 gr to re-sight for hunting, no issues with the ammo.

My problem was with .257 WBY 100 gr. Spitzer in the new Weatherby box.  had my WBY ACCUMARK in that calibre for two years and have not had one miss-fire in at least 200 shots both factory and/or reloads.  However, it was -20 F, and I thought maybe the fireing pin was sluggish so did a thorough cleaning of the bolt assembly and have had no problem since.  I haven't shot on a colder day either.

I would do three things all before firing more cartridges.

First clean the bolt innards and firing pin.

Second measure the firing pin protrusion to see it is in spec (the required numbers are on the website).

Third I would measure the headspace of the cartridges that misfired. Then measure the others in the box and mark those that appear to be the same as the misfired cartridges, or shorter than the average. See if those tend to cause trouble on your next range outing.

If a cartridge is very short then the firing pin can sometimes drive the case forward in the chamber absorbing some of the firing pin energy and resulting in light strikes. I acknowledge that this is less likely with a belted cartridge design and this is why I am of the opinion that dangerous game cartridge with a belt (or a rim for that matter) may be superior to one without a belt; i.e. 460 Wby vs. 450 Rigby Rimless for example.
I shoot cases with a belt because I feel the other cartridges need to pull their trousers up.

Ronnyj,
My name is Teresa from the Service Dept at Weatherby.  We apologize that you did not receive a response to your previous email through our web site.
We would be happy to take a look at the rifle and some of your fired cases/ammo to see what may be causing this problem.  Please contact our Service Dept with the serial number of the rifle and the lot number of the ammunition. They will able to issue a Return Authorization Number to return both, though if you have any live ammunition remaining it cannot be shipped in the same packaging as the rifle.  We can also send packaging for shipping if needed.
We can be reached at 800-227-2023 Monday - Thursday between the hours of 6:30am - 5:00pm Pacific time.
Thank you.
