New guy with Mark V in 7 STW

Greetings!

First post and introduction... Picked up my first Weatherby, a Mark V rechambered to 7 STW off GunBroker and have been working to get it set up to my liking and the accuracy dialed in.

So far I've added a Swarovski Z5, replaced the plastic stock with a fancy  wood stock, given it a thorough cleaning and touched up the bluing. Initial accuracy was terrible, so I bedded the action and free floated the barrel.

Prints 1.25" to 1.75" at 100 yards with mixed bag of factory ammo. Now working up handload recipe with RL26 and 162 gn A Max. Ladder loadings clock from 3,080 to 3,300 fps. Going with middle of this range and experimenting with seating depth.

Factory trigger needs some attention as it is a bit firm AND inconsistent. Breaks at 3 lbs 14 ozs most pulls, but as low as 2 pounds and some change every 5 or 6 pulls. No idea if it has been tinkered with previously, but probably a good bet.

I'm a hobbiest gun tinkerer, shooter and hunter. I've found a lot of good information here and decided to join ya'll. Looking forward to becoming a regular.

Regards,
Bill

Welcome to the site.
Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

Welcome aboard. That's a handsome rig you've got there.
Some like cologne, I like the smell of gunpowder.

Welcome to the Nation. You've put together a very nice looking rifle, love walnut, and I'm sure your hand loads will tighten up those groups. That trigger sounds like it could use some serious adjustment to help with a consistent break. Keep us updated, Good luck.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

The Mark V is part nostalgia and part me being unconventional. Some of the guys at the range have given me some grief, but I want it to look as good as it shoots and plastic and/or tacticool is not my thing.

I primarily hunt West Texas whitetail, but we have plenty of free range exotics and pigs. Usually toting my 1977 vintage .270  Rem BDL that is still excellent left eye medicine. For the Mark V, I plan to make a 600+ yard shot across a canyon where aoudad sheep frequently appear and maybe go Elk hunting someday.

You must be out in way West Texas. There are a decent amount of us Texans on here. I hope to plan an Aoudad hunt in the future.

I'd love to see some pics of the country you hunt if you ever want to post some.
