How many shots before serious cleaning?

How many shots before serious cleaning?
« on: May 18, 2018, 05:40:53 PM »
First post.

After the break-in procedure, I'm wanting to check some different ammo.
Starting with a squeaky clean barrel, looking to shoot three shot groups of four factory loads.

Can I shoot twelve rounds before dirty becomes a factor?  Cooling between groups, of course....

Thanks

Welcome to the Nation.I would shoot a couple fouling rounds after the cleaning before shooting your different ammo for groups. You can easily shoot your 12 more rounds before fouling should become a problem.

I routinely shoot one fouling shot and 4 three shot groups to evaluate handloads. I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning the barrel between groups. I would allow the barrel to cool between three shot groups. You want to know how the rifle groups from a cold barrel not a hot one.

If you want to see when accuracy will drop off with your rifle, start shooting groups with one load until the groups open up. That may be hundreds of rounds...every barrel is a rule unto itself.

After cleaning my .257 takes about 5 rounds to settle down and shoot good groups again
Agree with everyone that you don't have to worry about 12 rounds before cleaning

I donít really count the rounds before I shoot, when I start getting larger groups than previous outing I know thats when it needs it. My .308 has only been cleaned 3 or 4 times and I have had it a few years and shot many rounds through it.
If I was thinking really hard about round counts and cleaning my Weatherby I would say 25 or so maybe? Like other say keep barrel cool. I set a timer on my phone.
