Just got my 1st Weatherby

I just got the best trade I've ever made! I traded my Sig P938 for a Mark V in 270 WBY Mag. The pics of the gun showed it had a scope, but he wanted to keep it (which I was cool with). He calls me the day before we were to meet up, and said he couldn't get the scope off. Apparently his father in law lock tighted the screws. He said if I gave him $100 I could just have the scope. I said OK, as the scope looked like a Leupold from the pics (fingers crossed). I met him, and the rifle looked great, and the scope was a Leupold Vari-X iii 6.5-20X50. I am so excited, I have always wanted a Weatherby Mark V!!! He said the rifle was shot 5 times, and took 2 deer. It looks like it too! Just ordered 3 boxes of Weatherby ammo 130 gr SP. From the serial number, it was made in Japan. I can't wait to shoot it!!!!!

Yes welcome to the nation. And welcome to the world of Weatherby rifle owners. We are a funny bunch of all sorts but you will soon fall in with us lol. But as I have said to other new Weatherby owners, be warned as one Weatherby rifle just isn't enough! Soon you will searching high and low for that next deal or saving your hard earned folding stuff to buy a brand new one. It'll be a crazy ride but you will love it.  ;D

Welcome Firedawg, a 270 WBY is a fine choice it will cover most all hunting. A 130g ballistic tip or partition at 3400+ fps is a killing machine with light recoil.

After some research it looks like a Classic Mark with a black synthetic stock. I'll get some pics up when I get home.

I'm moving back home to Northern California after being gone for 25 years. I retired a few years ago in Florida from the USAF, and I'll be coming back home to California by the end of the year. Here is the gun porn :)

Great looking combination rifle and scope. The stock looks to be in great shape so I can imagine the barrel finish is in like new condition also. I'll agree with Cptn, that was a charmed deal on the scope. You may have to re-position the scope because the eye relief may not be a good fit for you, but thats  minor. I'd just suggest you run a patch or two through the the barrel to see what you find, but with a rifle in that condition, I'd also guess you'll have her zeroed in less than 5 rounds. Good Luck

The first thing I did was clean the barrel. It was a little dirty, but it's like a mirror now, and strong rifling. I'm going to give it a proper cleaning tomorrow, and fondle it a little more :) I'm dying for my ammo to get here!!!! It just sucks that in my area, there's not a range longer than 100 yards. Maybe I just have to look a little harder once I get it dialed in at 100.

At least getting it dialed in at the 100 yard range will let you get right to the fun stuff when you find a longer range.  :D

Firedawg, It might not be a bad idea to treat it as if it had just been bore sighted and shoot at least one shot at a 25 yard bullseye to see exactly where it hits cold barrel.(Might be a good time to check to see if the right/left windage clicks are exact.(some guys do some won't) If you decide to adjust the scope at 25 yds and it uses 1/4 inch increments, remember each click represents 1/16 of an inch, so if your one inch right at 25, you need 16 clicks left.
