Another Range Day with the 300

Went back to the range with the load that shot well the first couple times out.

180gr Sierra ProHunter
H4831

First two groups were very disappointing and had me scratching my head, so I checked the action screws... Very loose! The front was pretty loose and the rear was loose enough to put my finger on it and turn it. I thought I checked these screws when I bought it but don't remember.

These are some of the first groups before tightening the action screws

After tightening the action screws (which had me hitting way low) groups were very pleasing.

 A couple here

I must have missed the original post but what brand of rifle and what type of stock is on it, synthetic or wood?
You may need to use a thread locker to keep them tight and proper screw torque values will help also.

Cpt Awesome: I’m guessing you used a near max but book-safe load. The same bullet and power has been very good in my 300 Wby. The 180 Sierra’s were hard to find but the Hornady’s were easy to get and I stocked up on the bullets and the powder.

You would be absolutely correct sir!

Used H4831SC the first couple times but ran out. Cabelas only had H4831 this time so I went with it. Shoots the same as far as I can tell.

Yeah come on CptnAwesome, how could you be proud of those groups. I too think you need to reevaluate your loading process. Maybe even take a loading course.  ;D

Great shooting, and a great load. I got a great load using IMR 7828SSC, with 180 grs Accubond.  Took that load with me to Africa, and didn't fail me, everything was dead with one shot.  ;D ;D

I wouldn't go that far, it's very very close to meeting our one hole standard!!!
