Weatherby Vanguard True North in 300 Wby

Hey folks! Just finished coming back from the range after firing my new True North in 300 Wby Mag. Had awesome results. I had whipped up several hand loads with three different types of 180 gr bullets - Nolsler AB, Hornady ELDX and Barnes TTSX.  I used middle of the road powder loads and took them to the range.  Also brought a box of Weatherby factory Select 180 gr and a box of HORNADY Precision Hunter 200 gr ELDX.

The Nosler and Barnes in the 180 grain shot the best. Sub-MOA with a 5 shot group from the AB and 4 shot with the Barnes. I pulled a shot with the Barnes high and to the right. One of the Barnes bullets went virtually through the same hole. I actually thought I missed until I measured the hole and saw it was wider that it should be. These were using Reloder 22 powder.

I also did a second Barnes load using RL26.  This load did very well and other than my called shot it produced sub-MOA as well.

The 178 ELDX did not group at all with this powder load (80.5 grains RL22) and my rifle. The "group" was about 3.5 MOA at 100 yards.

The factory Weatherby did not group as well as I thought it might either. About 2.25" group. The Hornady Precision Hunter 200 ELDX however was 1/2 MOA!  That is pretty good factory ammo!

All in all, I am very satisfied with this rifle. Brand new out of the box it is a shooter with several types of bullets. With a little finessing of the loads I think I see great things for this one.

Anyhow, thought I would share and certainly if anyone has thoughts love to here them.

Cheers!

Congratulations on the gun and good shooting!! Those groups will get a little tight after you have a few rounds thru it

UPdate ..... Well .... still no luck with the 178 ELDX in this rifle. I have tried from min to max and the best my rifle would group the 178 Hornady bullets was a 4 shot group on 1.5 inches at 100. Looks like going with the 180 gr Nolsler Accubonds and Barnes TTSX in 180 gr. Both group in the  3/4 MOA range. Also going to give the 200 gr NAB a go.  ( I want a load with a bit more SD in the stable for big critters!).

Odd thing is the Precision Hunter ammo with the 200 gr. ELDX shoots sub-MOA. Maybe I give the 200 grainers a try at a later date in my hand loads. No time to fart around now ... moose season in less than a month. Got to get squared away!

I知 curious as to your expected range you値l be shooting at. When is 4 shots at 100 yards at 1.5 inches bad? Moose are big. Many, many moose have been brought down just fine with rifles that shot a lot larger groups than that. I think you値l be fine with whatever load you go with. Wish you the best in your hunt.

I'd try different seating depths now on the 178 Hornady.Take my best powder charge load and start playing with seating depths.I'm also with Jaeger77.Is 1/2 an inch better grouping really going to matter?Maybe with piece of mind.
Sorry... Yesterday was the last and final day for any and all complaints whatsoever.

I try to avoid temptation unless I can't resist it.

I did have a successful hunt!  Got a great cow moose ( had a cow tag) with my rifle. The shot (after all that prep) ..... 130 yards and basically I was tracking, came around a wooded bluff and ran face to face with her.  Not sure who's eyes were bigger .... hers or mine.  Anyhow, quick off hand shot, slightly high but very effective.  Dropped right there , never took another step.  That was with the Hornady 200 gr ELDX Precision Hunter ammo.

I will post picture soon as well.

Yeah, 1.5 inch group would be plenty fine for hunting and in days gone by a great result from any rifle, I just have a real OCD when it comes to tiny groups.

Cheers,

R
