Shaw barrels? Thinking about rebarreling a 308 Win to 338 Federal

I have a Weatherby Vanguard s1 I am thinking about rebarreling. I am not familiar with a rebarreling job. Do their barrels come already threaded and just screw right in? Or will I need to find a gunsmith to do the job?

When ordering from Shaw you need to call them to place an order and they will ask you exactly what you want done including what action you have and they will thread it for the action. I suggest you go to the website and look at their pricing list and write down what you want down before calling. It usually takes a gunsmith to remove the old barrel, install and head space the new barrel. My local gunsmith charges $150.00 for any of the Savage, Ruger, Remlin, etc and $200.00 for Mauser etc., and a little more if the stock needs to be worked on. I have a few of their barrels and they have all been excellent shooters.

The Vanguard has metric threads, complicating this idea. 338 Federal? Check available ammo and reloading brass first. I'd  pick something a tad more mainstream. What caliber is the S1?

The S1 is a 308 Win. I figured since the 338 Federal is a 308 case necked up to fit a .338 bullet, it should be relatively easy job. I already have a 22-250, 240, 6.5-300, 270, 7mm, and 300 wbys, 270wsm, and 30-06. I think that it would be a nice addition and still be a Weatherby

Like OldChet say's, call them, 412-221-3636, they offer gunsmithing services as well as barrels. They're sort of a one stop shop. I've read varying reviews but mostly they are good. My personal experiences have been outstanding.

If it's a short action and you want .338 might go with a .338x284win. If it's long action 338x06 is a good one. I had built 30x284 same as ought six but short action. The 284 case holds almost same powder as 30-06

I have a 338 Federal in a Tikka T3 I bought in 2010 when they were fairly popular. Federal used to sell brass and I bought some, but the majority of my brass is 308 win. One pass through a full length 338 Federal die with enough lube and it's done. I do take a black Sharpie and make a circle around the rim to make sure I don't accidentally try to chamber it in my 308 win. For me it makes the perfect bear and pig gun. Using 215 grain sierra boat tail at 2500 fps and sighted in 1 3/4 high at 100 yards it's good to 225 yards. Never had to shoot anything twice. Federal makes ammo for it, never tried any though. Guides are impressed with how quick animals go down.

You are wise to consider the 338 Federal since the original rifle is a 308. It's best to have a gunsmith install it so the headspace can be set properly. Some barrel makers like PacNor will rebarrel it for you if you send the action. Like was mentioned, you have to make sure whoever does it is capable of threading the barrel to the Vanguard action. Do it and enjoy.

You could also contact J.E.S. Reboring and have the existing barrel bored and rifled and chambered for the 338 Fed and save some money. I had a 30-06 done in .358 and it came out very good. The dang thing thinks it's a sniper rifle.

I’ve had five Shaw barrels put onto receivers. Each barrel has been very accurate from the get-go. I’ll give credit to the gunsmith for an outstanding fitting and Shaw for making very affordable and high-quality barrels. I had to send a barrel back because of a mistake on my part with the receiver and Shaw let me trade it for the same barrel / chambering.
As for Shaw’s closest match in all matters, I think it is McGowen Barrels.
