240 v 25-06

given either of them with the 24 inch barrel at resonable shooting ranges say no more then 400 yards how do you think they stack up on deer size animals .i can only buy one next spring in the vanguard make.i have dies for the 25-06 but can get the set for the 240 and cases for the 240 easy enought.i now hunt with a 300 winchester magnum and have a 300 weatherby mark v.
i only hunt deer now that i am retired and live on a fixed income.i hunt in pa.

The 240 is a great cartridge but so is the 25-06. The 25-06 is easy to find ammo for and a lot cheaper than the 240. I believe the 25-06 can handle heavier bullets also which would be useful if you're going to stretch it out to 400 yards and that is a stretch but doable with proper shot placement.

Personally I have opted for the 240,but for you I think the 25-06 is a better choice.

I have both but I have always had a soft spot for the 25-06. While I doubt any critter will feel the difference between a 100grn pill from either the .240 or 25-06, it is the 25-06's advantage of being able to handle heavier projectiles up to 120 grains. Plus the 25-06 is a lot cheaper to run and I'd dare say easier to find ammo for.

They will both get the job done.25-06 a little cheaper for commercial ammo and since you have dies. Something to be said for having a Weatherby caliber though.

I hunt eastern whitetails (in Canada) and "incidental black bears" with a 243.

Both of those calibers have a good bit more "firepower" than the 243.

Either would be fine deer calibers @ 400 yards or less.

thank you all for your imput.my wife says to op for the 240.she will find enought money for what i need.also said later in 2019 i can get the 25-06 .
so descion is made i am addindg a 240 to my collection in the late spring or early summer...

Since your on a fixed income and already have a 300 Win mag and 300 Wby mag, I don't see the point in this. Both rifles you have now, will easily do what you want. And if the recoil is starting to be an issue, just get some H4895 and 130 or 150 gr bullets and make up a reduce recoil load in either caliber.  A reduced recoil load of 3000 fps will still shoot flat enough and hit hard enough to do what you want.

You’ll love that 240, by far and away my most widely used Weatherby cartridge. Hard hitting, flat shooting, and barely any recoil. I’ve taken some nice mule deer at pretty extended ranges and the results have been excellent. Not saying it’s better then the 25-06 but definitely has the cool factor going and with the spitzer ammo a guy can find ammo pretty dang reasonable.

I have killed whitetails with both the 25/06 Remington and the 240 Weatherby Magnum.  IMO it's a draw.  Both cartridges are very effective on deer.  The 25/06 may have a slight advantage due to the heavier bullets that are available but the difference is miniscule. Brass and ammo are easier to find for the 25/06 Remington.  When I bought my 240 Magnum I  purchased a good supply of brass for that very reason.
