Issue w/ new 257
« on: January 02, 2019, 02:26:52 PM »
Purchased a new Vanguard S2 in 257Roy as the price was right and ran into an issue Iíve yet to see on any rifle custom or factory.  The chamber wonít accept 257 brass.  The necks are too long even when trimmed well below spec and the bolt wonít close.  Instead of packaging up and sending bac to Wby I just resized 7RM and chambers like butter.  For the record I havenít shot it yet.

Anyone else ever have an issue like this?

Just to get me on the right track, when you say brass do you mean Weatherby Ammunition or just the brass case. You said you haven't shot the rifle yet so where did the brass come from?

Yes, what condition? New brass?. Sized or unsized? Once fired? Very common with brass fired in another rifle. Just wondering.

Did you try running the .257 brass through the same die you used to resize the 7RM brass?
You have one that chambers and one that doesn't, compare them and you should be able to find the issue.
If this is new .257 brass it may be wrong sized brass.
It seems you have a die that will size the brass to fit

Wonít chamber brand new Wby brass, once fired FL sized Wby brass or factory Wby loaded ammo.  Long neck is obvious culprit as 7RM through the same die chambers beautifully

If you're having issues because the necks are too long I would say it's safe to say that the brass you bought wasn't truly once fired.  Even if you loaded and fired it twice the necks wouldn't stretch so much that they'd prevent you from chambering them.  One other thing that's a possibility is you're die isn't camming over but I don't think that's the case because you can make brass that works form 7mm Remington Magnum brass although I could be wrong about this.
Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

If it wont chamber brand new factory ammo then my guess is that the barrel never got final reamed and head spaced. Typically a barrel is reamed .050 shy and then final hand reamed after it's installed on the action. I would send it back or you could spend a couple of hundred on a reamer and head space gauges and finish it yourself. You can test this if you take one of your fully sized cases and shorten the neck by .050. If it chambers then that's what happened.

Full length size your weatherby brass then try again.

He can't chamber new, in box, factory ammunition. Resizing will not help.

He says he can chamber a case sized to 7mm RM which has a case length max of  2.500. The 257 WM case has a max length of 2.549 and won't chamber. Rifle barrels are normally rough chambered .050 shy and then finish reamed after the barrel is installed in the action. This is how head space is set. Given that the difference in length between the 7 RM and the 257 WM is .049 I'd say the odds are pretty good that his rifle never got finish reamed. He needs to send it back.
