Jeweled

Jeweled

Pretty sure most of you know what a jeweled bolt is. The one in the attachment was brush jeweled and has over 600 impressions. Typically the more impressions the prettier it is and the more work involved. I have all the stuff to make it as easy as possible but it's still a five to six hour job. I did this one yesterday.

Brush jeweling is not my favorite because it's messy and hard to see your progress. You just have to get into a rhythm and trust. Damascus is my preferred method but I dropped and broke my stone so I used the brush/lapping compound method.

What you may not know is that beyond being pretty, it's also functional. That's correct, there is actually a reason for engine turning a piece. It will cause the piece to hold a very thin layer of oil and prevent corrosion. Bet you didn't realize that.

Also makes for a smoother glide while cycling the action.

Just finished another Jeweled bolt. This one is for the Weatherby Mark V .308 Tactical Response Rifle (TRR). This time I used my favorite 3/16 medium grit Cratex Jeweling rods. Jewels are overlapped every .100 inch in 20 degree increments. Each jewel was held for 10 seconds. The total when done was 744 jewels and it took over 6 hours to complete. This pattern is a straight overlap with no offset which I thought would be more appropriate on a bench gun. When I do my Mark V Deluxes, I'll use an offset pattern which is more elegant.

Decided to change the fluting from black to gold. I was going to gold leaf them but it wasn't cooperating so I decided to use imitation gold paint instead. Real gold paint is really expensive. The imitation is made from finely ground 80/20 Alloy (80 percent copper/20 percent zinc). This isn't the junk you get a Lowes, but you can get it on Amazon from fine art restoration dealers. It's used to repair picture frames.
