New member, just purchased new in box Vanguard S2, need scope help

J.L.R.

Hi all, as stated in the message title I'm new to this particular rifle and would like to know what the best moderately priced scope is the best performing. I have already purchased the Talley 30mm mounts. All opinions and/or recommendations gladly accepted.

It comes down to how much money you can spend.  There are great scopes from numerous manufacturers. What ever you do, check the scope in natural light----not the light inside a store.

A lot is personal preference but I like Vortex Diamondbacks for an affordable scope. :)

PS  What caliber?

Agree with all questions asked so far. Also, what is your ballpark price, say within $100 up or down?

What type of hunting do you do, how far are you looking to shoot, and what drove your decision to get a 30mm scope?

So if you're hunting with it then you can get a better scope in your price range than if you were trying to do long distance shooting. The one I like that's a great scope with a great field of view is the Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x44. The plex reticle is about 399.00 and the BDC reticle is about 499.00. These are made in the Philippine's but Vortex backs their products 100% not matter where they are made.

Will this rifle be carried/used for a lot of walking or will you primarily be hunting from a fixed location with it? How far do you anticipate your average shots being? (More or less same questions as Wyominghunter)

What height rings did you get?

I sell firearms/scopes/hunting&fishing junk etc.

Many scopes with 30mm tubes have an (ocular bell) a little larger than those on 1" tubes. That combined with the 90 degree bolt lift on the VGII's can cause some interference issues with the medium and even high rings.

On the VGII's I have mounted a few Burris Veracity's - 2.5-10X42 (30mm) and we ended up having to mount with extra-high Talley's to prevent the bolt handle from rubbing the bell (or picking off the caps). Awesome scope for all round hunting but a little out of your stated price point.

You might take a look at the Nikon Prostaff 7. Good glass (I just personally hate their BDC reticle with the little circles), but it would come in somewhat under-budget - leave enough money for a case of "practice/sighting ammo" :)

Well there's nothing wrong with the 30mm rings but if you had waited till you found the scope you wanted you would have had other choices on some great deals.
Natchez has some good scope deals on Burris E-1 1" scopes and I put one of these on a M70 338 Win Mag.
Check the on line price and you will be wishing you had bought 1" rings.

I will put my vote in for the Nikon Pro Staff 7. I think it is verry good glass for the money.

It would require returning the 30mm rings for 1", but you will be hard pressed to buy better glass in a better configuration for anything under $600 than this Meopta:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1050801-REG/meopta_598370_meopro_3_9x40_z_plex.html

It is gin clear, bright, and will track well. The power range is well suited to the ranges one might be shooting a 308Win sporter style rifle, and it will be hard to destroy.
