338 Win M70

338 Win M70

Well it looks like I have a shooter on my hands.
Took the new to me M70 Classic to the range today and sighted it in with some get me on paper reloads, 200gr Speer HC over 72grs of RL19 2592fps which was Speer's bottom load.
Bore sighted at 25 yds and fired three at 50 yds to get it close and then took it to 100 yds.
I covered up the 50 yd shots but here's the 100yd  walking it to the center. First shot was at 3 o-clock
and over compensated with number 2 at 9 o-clock number 3 at 11 and then the number four was in the orange dot  at 9 and I tweaked the windage to the right and the next 3 were centered.
Sorry for the off center picture.

Thanks for the kindness.
I can't wait to see what it will do when I get serious and work up a hunting load for it and do a trigger job on it.

When you get the load that it likes figured out I bet it'll put all three shots touching.  For starting out that's a good group and shows the potential this rifle has in it.
Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

Not being smart but as far as hunting, anything with four legs that I have a mind to.
The trigger is hard to say , I have stoned the surfaces and lightened the springs so if it's like my other M70s it won't need a Timney.

Thanks Chris.
When I first got into it cleaning it and such I found the front screw on the rear scope base was half stripped out and wouldn't hold pressure so I made a trip to my local gun smith and had him drill and tap all the base screw holes to 8-40s. They should hold up better.
I think this one will be fun playing with it to find what it likes best.

lol Good answer. My 338 really likes the 250 grain bullets if you decide to try heavier.

Great start! Looks like it's gonna be a shooter.  I've owned five 338 Win Mags. All five shot submoa with 225 grain Barnes bullets (Xbullet and TTSX) when fueled by a max book charge of IMR 4350. Four of five rifles shot best with these bullets seated 50 thousandths from the lands. It has been my one bullet load for all my big game hunting with the 338 WM.

+1
Loading that bullet in .340 and it performed perfect, also used it in 338 win
Before that l loaded the Hornady 200 or 225 grain interlock SP, which ever one the rifle liked best. Great bullets in that cartridge

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I haven't tried the mono bullets yet since I can buy the old lead core type cheaper and they do what I need to do and did I say cheap? OH and no I'm not related to Grouchy though we both are from MD. :o ::) ;D
